Sound proofing for air compressor? Anyone done it?

I use my air compressor all the time while detailing, but it is loud as hell.



I am thinking of building a sound proofing cabinet for it and was wondering if anyone has done it? Any suggestions? Idea?

I did it. I used 1/4" mdf. 4 sides with a "lid" on top, holes for air lines, etc. it is still loud but now I can stand next to it without going deaf. also, lift the lid after each motor run so it can cool, to much heat and it will go into thermal (overtemp) shutdown.
 
I was thinking fo this too cause if I get one I want it quiet. I think just build a cabinet around it and use a lot of sound proff insulation. Also, since it is inclosed, get fresh cool air to it to keep the motor cool. Maybe hook a fan to the cabinet or something?

Since posting the question, I have found a place that sells soundproofing material.

I plan to build an enclosure and am drafting the plans at the moment. It will:



1. Be a box within a box

2. Use sound proofing material

3. Have a fan for cooling

4. Have a remote air pressure valve that is also a line moisture filter

Be warned the compressor needs to breathe...that is suck in air to compress and also suck in air to cool the compressor....if you ox it up ....they not to last so long due to excessive heat build up......



Try moving it.....move it outside in a storage type building or shed, or just under a roof.....

Just an fyi...if you're looking for soundproofing/damping materials, use mcmaster.com and do a search for "sound dampers" -- you can learn all about the different types and their stuff is hella cheap.



I'd personally never use anyone else. their stuff is incredible (use it on my 4runner for sound proofing for audio).



Just a heads-up!
 
you can make a box with MDF and put some dense foam or styrofoam on the inside to help muffle the noise.



As mentinoed, you have to allow for cooling and allow an air intake.
