Sonus Orange Pad cracking

scooch

PC @ 6 = Ludicrous speed
Hey everyone used the PC for the first time on Friday and found it fairly easy to use. However as I was using the Sonus orange cutting pad with SSR1 about halfway through i noticed the pad began to crack around the back where the velcro is located and up along the sides. :( Has anyone else experienced this? Is this common amongst cutting pads? On a more comical note I attached a buffing bonnet for some finishing and had the PC on 6 and accidently lifted it off the car and boy did that bonnet go flying. :rolling it was quite amusing at the time.

My orange Sonus pad is cracking like yours as well. It took a few uses, however. It does not, IMO, effect the pad in any way other than cosmetics at the moment.

Just a thought, but that pad is a little "harsh" for SSR1, isn't it? I find that that pad can leave some hazing that needs to be followed up with a polish pad.

Jared, I have the SONUS and Edge lines...can you tell me what pad goes with what products: SSR 1, 2, 2.5, and 3...plus PB Professional Polish. I don't use my PC to apply sealants...just polishes and SSR's. Thanks

P.S. I too used the Orange pad with SSR's last fall when I used it, will be using it again soon on other cars and want to use the right pad with the right product.

Didnt really see any hazing when using it with SSR1. At first I used the polishing pad and didnt really see any results then I decided to use the cutting pad and started better results but I did follow it up with the polishing pad.

Honda - I think it varies from person to person and detail to detail, but I'll give you my personal "guidelines" for using what with what. This is by no means a definitive guide or anything.....

SSR1 - a polish pad at most, to clean up hazing. Usually a finish pad if th paint is in good condition or I don't get any hazing.

SSR2 - Polish pad.

SSR2.5 - I have used this stuff with almost every pad I own. It's pretty versatile, but usually a polish pad. I have used the Sonus orange cut pad with it (pretty aggressive) and the Edge Medium (yellow) & Light (green) cut pads. The Edge green with SSR2.5 is a very good combo for me.

Maybe other san chime in with their pad/polish combos - that might make for an interesting thread. :)

Just for reference:

Sonus DAS Orange - cutting
Sonus DAS Green - polish

Edge Yellow - Med cut
Edge Green - Ligh cut
Edge Blue - polish

Yeah, happened to me also. Seems to be a design flaw, the next smaller size plate would be needed to prevent further tearing.

scooch - SSR1 is not really meant to remove much marring IMO. If you run into something that the SSR2.5 won't handle, I would suggest the SSR2.5. There's very litle that I have found that it cannot handle. If SSR2.5 with the PC @ speed 6 can't handle it, then I guess I'd just have to live with it or learn how use a more advanced technique (i.e. rotary).

Bill, I was using the Sonus back plate the whole time with my DAS Orange pad. The 5" bp. I think my problem came from using a little more pressure than necessary coupled with speed 6 and a thick polish. Just my .02. I don't think there's anything wrong with the pad, per se, just the normal operator error. :cool

Probably not made to withstand the pressure and the speed under the dual action movement. Quite a few have reported similar tearing issues with the orange Lake Country pads. I don' know if they have/are in the process of changing the foam. :dunno

On the bonnet flying.... Early on I had a cheap plastic 10" orbital. I lifted it one time while it was still moving to switch places on the car and the whole pad and backing fell off. The big chuck of metal was moving around. Thankfully I was able to stop from putting the buffer down on the paint as that would have been a nasty problem.

Jared, if 2.5 + PC won't work, wouldn't you try SSR 3 next ?

I was leary of that at first, and yes I have tried it, after asking Steve of course, on a pretty rough surface - my mom washed her Blazer with a rag that was previously used to apply Bon Ami to a window. Hey...she didn't know... :) It worked, but the SSR3 left a good deal of hazing that I removed with 2.5 on a cut pad, then 2.5 on a polish pad. I guess what I am saying is that SSR3 can be used with a PC, but from what I have heard, it works best on a rotary. You just have to be very patient when using it with a PC because you will have hazing that is time cinsuming to remove. At least that's the way I look at it from personal experience.

Yes, the first time I saw hazing with 3 or 2.5 I got scared -- I thought I marred the paint over a much larger area than the original scratch.

I take it you just have to use "finer" pads and SSR's and work "down" to get rid of the hazing, right?

Come to think of it, what actually causes the hazing with the heavier grades -- it doesn't happen with the lighter ones -- and why does going to finer polishes/pads get rid of it??

All hazing and all swirling is scratches. The bigger the scratch, the bigger the abrasive in the product. As you get rid of the scratches, you leave smaller ones that need smaller abrasives. You have to remember that polish is abrasive, it's just the right amount of abrasive to remove the scratch without damaging the paint.
