Sonax FE cleaning steps?

Hi all,

I washed my girlfriends car this past weekend and I tried out Sonax FE for the first time. However, I am not sure if I used the product to its full potential.

I sprayed the green slime on the wheels, scrubbed the wheels and then allowed the Sonax to sit. I never really saw the bleeding nor did a lot of brake dust break free from the insides of the wheels. Mind you, I did not read the directions...

Should I be letting the Sonax sit longer to eat away at the iron before agitation?

Thank you for the help!

Hmmmm. what type of car is it? It wouldn't happen to be a Ferrari 458 with ceramic brakes would it? cuz those will never bleed :D

haha, but in all seriousness, When I use it. you just spray the FE onto the wheels. let it dwell,(it should start turning soon after this but if not, give it a 3-5 min) then agitate. I find that the EZ detail brush gives good scrubbing abilities on dirtier type of wheels (vs. the wheel woolie) and after all this, you just rinse. For me a pressure washer is preferred but not mandatory . hope this helps

Thank you Eric!

I wish my girlfriend drove a 458. :tongue1:

01 Maxima. My guess is that I didnt leave it on long enough to really work into the brake dust. I did agitate with an EZ detail brush and a wheel woolies. Next time I will have to let it dwell longer.

What type of finish is on the wheel? If it is the factory wheels with a painted finish and the brake dust is just caked on like crazy, then I would almost pull out some meguiars wheel bright at a diluted ratio. then agitate with that and then rinse.

wheel bright is pretty much a strong alkaline wheel cleaner that can damage bare polished aluminum, but painted or clear coated wheels can handle it to an extent, but it is a brake dust destroyer. :D. let me know how it works out for you.

They are the factory wheels. 6 spoke design.

I will probably have to pick some up. I would prefer to take the wheels off and clean them by hand, but it is just too cold right now in VA. Plus.. she'll never notice it anyway :(

Quick question regarding the Sonax FE. Do you spray it on dry wheels or do you have to rinse the wheel off first? I just bought a bottle of it this weekend and haven't had a chance to really try it out.

you can do either. you get better effect of it turning red if you spray it on a dry wheel. Or you knock off more break dust giving the wheel cleaner less to have to break down. try both and see what works best for you. but neither is going to hurt anything

Thanks, I'll try it both ways.

I originally tried it on wet wheels and I think that was part of my issue. The water was creating a small barrier between the Sonax and the brake dust. Next time I will spray it on dry wheels to see the difference.

Meguiars Wheel Brightener has a pH of 4.5- 5.5 and a health hazard rating of 3.

Sonax can be applied to a COOL dry wheel, or wet and left to dwell for ~10 minutes.
