Some good picts of orange peel

I took these with my new digital SLR with a 100/2.8 macro lens. These pictures jumped out at me and I thought you guys might be interested...they would be a good example for newbies to see what orange peel is all about.

The car (a MINI Cooper S in Electric Blue) was clayed, polished, and Twin'd. Argh, it still doesn't very good, now I know why--that factory paint is made of citrus!

I'm fighting the urge to fix it. If I fix it, I'll need to remove probably 50% of the clearcoat. We're talking heavy rotary polishing or even wetsanding. But the car would look good for a few years before the paint died early! :(

Sorry to revive an old thread, but all I have to say is DAMNIT!!! I wondered why the top of my trunk looked like that. Stupid ford paint.. :down It's orange peel!

It's hard to believe that Mini would let the car leave the plant like that. Someone taking a nap in the QC department? Thanks for the post BC, that is too bad such a nice car has orange peel. I'd be calling the dealership.

wow great pictures -- what camera is it? I finally understand now what orange peel is, I guess you have to see it properly (visually) to understand.

My Porsche paint wasn't much better with regard to orange peel, but my new '01 BMW looks quite good, very flat.

I think orange peel is becoming more common as techniques are changing. I have a hard time thinking of it as a "defect", just a characteristic I don't like. Plus, I'm showing off my new macro lens...if you see it in person it doesn't really look that objectionable. But it does help me understand why I've never seen a MINI photo that "pops" out at you like a Scottwax picture.

BoxsterCharlie- thanks for the info / photos useful info for everyone.

How do you rate the BMW against the boxster?

It's actually a perfect comparison, since both are bright red. The BMW paints seems harder and thicker than the Porsche. The paint application on is great on both paints. The Porsche paint seems to have more "depth" for some reason, but the orange peel is more severe.

BTW, I like the shade of BMW red better than Porsche's Guard's Red. Guard red is a tiny bit too orange for my taste. It looks washed out under bright sun.

I was told that it's a German technique to paint non-metallic colors this way to make them shimmer. I've had 3 Audis and the one non-metallic (the newest) has the orange peel while the other 2 didn't (one volcano black, one Atlas grey).

I also have checked out some on the showroom floor and this seems to hold: all non-metallics have orange peel, metallics don't.

Could just be coincidence though.

Well, this MINI is a metallic, and my Boxster was non-metallic. So I'm getting orange peel regardless!

I saw an amazing before/after of a guy who did wetsanding on a new or newer Boxster to flatten the paint. It looked fantastic, but it really bothers me to think (and not know for sure) how much of the paint life he sacrificed by doing that.

Huh - I'll ask at around.

So if the other car was "fixed" then that must mean the orange peel is in the clearcoat? I always got the impression that it was in the paint itself since my bumpers and runners don't have it but the panels do.

Charlie, I think the paints must be getting better at Porsche. My friend's new GT in silver is flawless and I just drove an 05 Boxster (love it and saving up) that was black and it had very, very little OP.
