Soft drive sockets

its not possible to avoid damage, to minimize it don't use and impact gun to remove/install lugs. either the one listed will protect the rim from contact damage of the socket and rim. the torque stick ones have the cork liner to protect the top of the lug. the best way to protect the sides is do it by hand.

Lug Nut Protection Sleeves

By using a tool like this you’ll avoid damage to the lug nuts – Griot’s Garage or Astro Pneumatic 7870 Set (with Protecting Plastic Sleeves)

Definitely always use a torque wrench to put lugs on. It will save them from getting beat up plus you want to torque them all down to the same spec. I do mine at 90 ft lb. It helps everything wear evenly. I have a breaker bar I use to take the lugs off. My lugs are painted black so an impact gun would destroy them.

I have sockets that are lined both on the inside and outside. BUT...this tip will work just as well...

Take a plastic baggie, or ziploc bag and place it over your lug nut. Push on the socket. The thin layer of plastic will protect the lugnut and is cheap and disposable. Works every time for me. And I am a fanatic. ;)

Glad I have yet to purchase any lug nut or torque wrench equipment yet because these tips are really great!

Anyone try Plasti Dip on their sockets? Seems like it could be a good idea, but I'm not sure if it would be too thick of a coating that it wouldn't allow the lug nut into the socket.

That can work, you'd just have to start off with a socket 1mm larger than the size you actually need for the lugs to account for the thickness of the plasti-dip.

I have pelican 17,19, 21mm set of. Impacts that have plastic on outside to. Protect rim. You can use painters tape on the lug of inside the socket if you want to protect the chrome, but i've never had damage to a lug with these sockets. Always torque to spec when placing wheel back the vehicle of course.
