Silicone based dressings bad?

I have heard in various posts that silicone can be frowned upon by autopians in dressings for trim and such. Why is that?

To me it's more myth than fact. I have used a silicone/solvent based tire dressing on my boat trailer for well over 6 years without any effects of deterioration or discoloring. Chances are you would wear out your tires before any possible side effects could cause any problems.

I think what you're referring to is the debate over PDMS (the milky, water-based dressings) and the polysiloxane (?) which are the oil/petroleum-based dressings.
