Should tire brushes be firm or soft?

I have seen both and I always thought you needed stiff bristles but I have seen tire brushes with soft bristles.

Can anyone tell me why or how one should choose?

TIA

I use ones that are as firm as I can use without marring the rubber, and that's pretty firm. I've tried the (much softer) BHBs I use on my wheels, but they don't scrub well enough to really CLEAN the tires. The "ergonomic tire brushes" (rubber handle, gray and white bristles, red rubber surround on the brush head)have pretty stiff bristles that work well for me (just don't hit your wheel with the stiff bristles).

I've even used a brass-bristle brush with no problems.

Are you familiar with OXO Brushes? I got the impression that they were soft.

Malachi- Heh heh, I must be the only person in the world who isn't familiar enough with the OXO brushes to say for sure :o

And I must be the only person who uses his B&D Scumbuster for scrubbing his tires.

I just picked up a firm bristle brush for low profile tires. I saw the same kind with brass bristles too but that scared me too much if I were to accidently hit the wheel with it. This brush is looking good :up

BillD, are you going to share? What brush? Where bought? Low profile tire owners want to know :D

I use the oxo with great results. It is half way between hard and soft - more towards soft since I use it so much.

Here's a tip - Go to Bed Bath and Beyond. The oxo line is sold there and you can buy the kitchen version of the tire oxo brush! It has blue bristles and is a bit stronger than tire one. I got it for $3.99 and use it on all sorts of tires.

I haven't marred my wheels yet with either brush. You'd have to be a real schmo to mar your wheels while cleaning the tires.

Also, the chemical used on your tires can help decide what brush you use.

I got my brush from Pal Automotive in Piscataway, NJ. Magnolia brushes is the manufacturer I think but there's no web site :( The brush was like $3 and change.

I'm of the "soft" school of thought because of the wheel issue and I feel the finer bristles reach into smaller crevices better (like ribbed lettering).

However, occasionally I have found myself wishing I had a stiffer brush for more stubborn stains/dirt.

I have a truck with big tires so I use a stiff bristle brush on them. No fear of hitting the wheels, the tires are too big....

Chicks dig guys in trucks with big tires!!!!!!
