Should I use abrasive AND chemical polishes today?

I told my mom I'd detail her car today. It is a 2001 Silver PT Cruiser and has never been polished or clayed.

At a minimum, I was planning on using Menzerna SIP w/ a white LC pad and buffing to a gloss (I have Nano Polish too, but figured I don't have to do that step on silver...), then topping with DG 105.

However, I also have some DG 101 (which is a chemical polish and sealant, like an AIO) and I was wondering if that might provide me with some cleaning benefits that I won't get from SIP.

My question is whether there is any point in using the DG 101 (AIO) if I'm going to use SIP? I'm really only using the 101 for its cleaning abilities since I'm going to top it with DG105. In all honesty I don't want to spend all day on the car and don't want to add steps that aren't necessary.

Thanks!

On silver i would just clay, AIO and seal it. I wouldnt even bother buffin it unless i was being paid to.

I just really want to "wow" her since this is her first detail on any of her cars...plus I just got my new SIP yesterday and want to play with it!!! Perhaps I should skip it and play on my car tomorrow?

I LOVE my mom. But -- whether she'll be able to truly appreciate the difference is another story. And given that my dad will go through and scratch the car up w/ his sh#tty wash techniques over the next few months, perhaps I should just do the AIO

I'd do some sort of correction, but that's just me. Having cared for abused family cars, I understand about overdoing it, but I'd still do *something* along those lines.

And, heh heh, I'd find a way to educate your dad on the washing. I was able to teach my dad how to do it when he was very old and set in his ways, and if I could get *that* guy to change his ways.... ;) Once he realized what a big difference a few changes made, he had no reason to keep doing it the wrong way and he took pride in how nice he was able to keep 'em.

Considering the car is silver, your dad has horrible wash techniques, and this is a family freebie, unless they're an autopian like you they'd be more than happy with just a wash, clay, AIO, then topped with a good, protective layer of wax/sealant. Why go through all that time and trouble only for the car to return to its previous state sooner than you want. Save the major detail for when they sell the car or something?

I would use the minimum steps necessary, that way you'll have time left over and maybe your parents would be nice enough to treat you to dinner or something.

Since its a freebie, I'd probably just touch up some of the scratches with the SIP, AIO the rest of it, then put a good protective sealant on it.

If there's one thing I've learned, its that if people don't take care of it before the detail, a freebie isn't going to change their habits. Keeping a clean vehicle is something they have got to WANT to do..
