ShopVac vs RidGid Both 5hp

I've had a larger ShopVac (5hp 16gal QSP) I purchased many years ago and it's been used and abused. I wanted to get a more mobile unit for cleaning cars, etc. I just picked up the RidGid 4050 (5hp 4 gal) that everyone's been raving about.

I decided to compare the suction of these two units since both are 5hp. I found that the ShopVac had quite a bit more suction than the RidGid. I guess I was expecting more from the RidGid since it's brand new and also 5 hp.

I also took the hose diameter variable out of the equation. I had an extra hose from the ShopVac that I plugged into the RidGid to compare the two, but even without the hose, and just feeling the power at the suction port of both units, the ShopVac clearly had more power.

Any thoughts as to why? Does the tank size add to the unit's suction power?

Thanks
