Shop Rags?

Hi Everyone,



What kind of shop rags do you guys/gals use when working on your cars. Not detailing your cars......but doing stuff like engine work, oil changes, etc



I bought a "bag of rags" from costco....those red shop towels......and now have the delima of wht to do with the dirty rags........manufacturer claims they are washable, but who wants to put oily rags in their family washing machine!



How do you all handle this situation?

red rags arent really that expensive so you could toss them. Or you could wash the ones that arent completly blacked from dirt.
 
I use those cotton terry towels that say Made in some foreign country, usually thirds(Pakistan, Bangledish?) or second world (Taiwan?.)



Use them once, gets dirty, throw them out. I get my cotton towels at walmart, a 12 pack for $5.84 or so. I used them engine work, wheel and tires work, door jambs, dash and interiors and other dirty jobs.
 
I second the Scott Shop Towels. I bought the big box of 200 (I think) for 10 bucks at Pep Boys:up
 
Shop rags are (almost) a thing of the past with me. I have two different dispensers, both by Tork. The blue towels are super heavy duty and absorbant. They are in this red dispenser shown here. I get the towels from a wholesaler, four rolls per case. A case lasts a year for me. About $25.

My other dispenser was a gift from a friend and is a "no touch" electric dispensor. Pretty cool! The towels are thinner and less absorbant but perfect for hand cleaning and general bench-top use. I have been on the same roll for months now.

I get my Bag-O-Red, cheapo shop rags at Sams warehouse but because of the need to wash them every so often I am using them less and less.

Brad, can you give us more information about those blue paper towels? Are they similar to the blue Scott shop towels? Any close-up pics?

Yes, the blue Tork shop towels are very similar to the Scott towels, I believe. They are two ply, reasonably thick and cloth-like. Very low dust output as well. I like them a lot. They are perforated every 10" or so but it's hard to tear them evenly no matter what you do. They always seem to rip on the edges as seen in the pic.
 
The restaurant I work at uses the Tork towels with the touchless dispenser. My boss said he'd try and get me a dispenser. They are just like thicker paper towels
 
Brad, Question about the funnels shown below the towel dispenser. Are they paper funnels? I have been trying to find them and can't seem to find except in Griots. I like the small dispenser. Tell me about it please. Thanks

I tend to use whatever is available, old sock, doilie, cat, you know.:D Really though, I have a small collection of the red rags, a roll of the scott towels, and a few so-called cotton towels. The scott towels get used the most though.
 
I've developed this habit of walking out of work with a rag still in my back pocket. Always seems to be a nice clean one too. ;) Every couple months I pack them all up into a plastic bag and they make their way back into work.
 
That funnel dispenser looks like the one Griots sells. I got one and I use it frequently.
