Shop at dealership

Hey all, I haven't been on here in a while but I have a great opportunity and need some advice. I have been doing Detailing and PDR part time for a couple of years now and have been waiting for a chance to go full-time.

I do PDR at a dealership on a major highway and they approached me with an opportunity that I have to consider. They know I detail and do good work but they need someone available everyday so they have someone offsite that does subpar work at best. They said if I was willing to go fulltime they would put up a carport with advertising for me and let it be a seperate business from the car lot. So, I would detail and wash their cars and have retail customers at the same time. I would also be doing PDR for the lot and retail customers on site.

We have not talked money yet and am a little hesitant to go in to talk to them about it until I get an idea of what I should be looking at. They have anywhere from 35-60 cars on the lot at a time priced anywhere from $5000-$30000. They take good care of their cars but they really need a detailer that knows what he is doing.

Now, here's my question. What should I approach them with? I pay them a percentage of what I make and charge them accordingly? Say 10-15%? Pay a monthly rent for the space? Make them a great deal on their cars and keep all retail customers to myself?

The dealers(partnership) have a great small town attitude with its customers and vendors that do work for them. It's the only dealer between the city and the town I live(closer to the city)...about a 10 mile stretch....and there is no other car wash or detailer in that 10 mile stretch. I think I can make a lot of $$$ from retail customers because of this.

What does everyone think??

First question you need to ask them... "What do you want from me to do this?" Have them lay it out since they are making the offer. Maybe they are thinking you become their's and won't let you do your own customers on the lot. Maybe they really don't care as long as you get their cars done as a priority (meaning you stop working on your own customer's car's to tend to theirs as they come in) and pay them "X" amount per month. Kind of keep it in mind what you really want out of this deal and let them tell you what they are thinking first and then start to negotiate to something you both will be happy with.

It sounds like they really need a trustworthy detailer/pdr person in their dealership. I recommend you offer to pay rent for the shop space, and charge them for each vehicle. I wouldn't go too low on your price for detailing, or pdr work. Dealerships generally want everything for half price, and done yesterday. You could easily get overwhelmed with work, and would make much more money just paying them rent. Also, never do anything for free. They'll get used to it, and expect it. Best of luck.

Yes, I work in Texas. I had a total of 2 weeks in the last year that I could not at least push dents. Rain affects detailing but as long as I have at least a car port I can do PDR. Under 40 degrees is the only weather that I cannot work in.

As for the "What do they want from me?" I think they want me to be onsite to detail and do PDR. It was their idea to set up advertising so I know they have me in mind. They ARE used car dealers so I have to be aware of the fact that there are benefits for them. They have 5 acres of property with 40+ cars on it so maybe they are just trying to utilize the property as much as they can.

I am still a little hesitant. I have a family so I have other things to worry about. Making enough money is not that much of an issue. I know I can make more than I make now with my full time job. Health insurance is what I am most worried about. I have decent insurance now and I have to find something comparable. I am going to start getting quotes on it this week but I am a little sceptical I will be able to find something reasonable.

edit: sorry for the late reply. Had family in town and had no idea I wouldn't have time to do more than check my email.
