That is a fantastic turnaround. What made you decide to wetsand? (I am not questioning your work, just curious on how you determine whether or not a car needs a wetsand). Thanks in advance

In case Joe does not answer the question on why to sand, if the car is really bad and the customer will pay the freight plus there is good readings on the finish to sustain a wetsand step you will level the finish quickly as opposed to grinding away with the wool.



Some customers will also want the orange peel removed, but on a O.E. finish I do not advocate this. 2000 or 3000 grit will level some orange peel and get the defects out, but hitting it with 800-1000 grit will thin the paint to much(it will be really clear and sharp but will fail especially if it is a daily driver and left outside).



In the Nineties I worked for a shop that restored Pontiac Tri-power GTO's, with most of them being black. I would have loads of clear to work with as the cars came out of the booth with a finish looking like a gravel road, so I would hit it with 800, 1000, 2000, 2500 grit(the 3000 grit Meguiars paper had not come out yet) then compound and fine finish and the the finish had no texture at all, but the point is there was enough paint to allow this to be done and corrected in the future as needed.

Yea what he said. I replied with my iPhone I guess it didn't go through. Thanks Bob. Watch the video where I am taking readings. I was getting as high as 20 mils in some areas with most readings in the 8-12 mil range. Could it be bondo, lots of primer, etc.... maybe. The paint was very rough. Not sanding woul dhave wasted tons of time and created lots of heat. Judging by the paint thickness readings and the condition of the paint I made and educated guess and when for it!
