Shampoo Test

Let me start by saying that these are simply my observations. They are not the result of some scientific experiment. I recently bought four shampoos to see which one worked best in my foam gun. I kinda figured that none of the four would really stand out above the rest. What I was looking for was excellent lubricity, lots of foam, great cleaning ability, great shine, great scent and sheeting ability. I decided to try some of the more popular one's talked about here at Autopia and they are:

Meguires - Gold Class

Poorboys - Super Slick & Suds

Duragloss - 901

Detailers Pride - Xtreme Foam

My 1st test involved placing a nickel size amount in my palm and rubbing and washing my hands to check lubricity and cleaning ability. The least slick was the DG901. PB & GC were similar to each other. However, DP was thicker and slicker than any of the others. After rinsing, the one that made my hands feel the cleanest by a long shot was the DP.

For my 2nd test I applied each shampoo with exactly the same ratios to a pane of residential glass. After washing each section I would rinse with free flow water. Then I would observe sheeting ability. Right off the bat I noticed that Meguires GC & DG901 were not sheeting well at all. They were holding onto water droplets and would not let go. Poorboys and DP were quickly showing them up.

My 3rd test was to check foaming action in my foam gun. Poorboys, Meguires & Duragloss all foamed about the same. However, Detailers Pride was in a league of it's own. The foam was so thick it was rolling down my hood like an ocean wave.

I could not believe my eyes.

My final observation was scent. Duragloss smells like cherries and unfortunately, I hate fake cherry scent. Gold Class has a nice clean soap scent. Poorboys kinda smells like soapy grapefruits and Detailers Pride smells like mint julep candies from when I was kid.

Summation: After careful thought I would rate the products like this:

#1. ***Detailers Pride - Extreme Foam***

#2. Poorboys - Ultra Slick & Suds

#3. Meguires - Gold Class

#4. Duragloss 901

I put a space between number one and the others because it was far superior to the other products listed and deserves to stand above the rest. I definately have a new shampoo. I am also currently testing the following 3 waxes: Clearkote CMW - Natty's Blue - Souveran.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoyed this review.

ptaylor_9849- Thanks for the good review :xyxthumbs

Any idea how the Detailer's Pride is on LSPs? Some good shampoos are a bit hard on waxes, at least for my taste.

Thank you for the review.

I honestly don't care how a soap makes my hands feel. Also I don't judge a soap by it's scent neither.

But good test and maybe I will try DP EF. Right now I will stick to my awesomeo 902.

Accumulator, too soon to tell as I just performed this test yesterday. They do say that it is ph balanced and claim that it won't strip lsp's. They also claim that it contains water softeners to help minimize water spotting. My vette looked better with this wash than any other wash I've used thus far.

I tried the foam gun for the first time with Zanio Z7 and I wasn't as impressed. I don't blame the foam gun or zaino. I need to know what mix do you put in the bottle and what ratio setting do you put it at. Because with what I did, it was almost the same results as the garden sprayer from lowes.

Setec, I used the exact same ratio of soap to water on each test. I also kept the foam gun on the same setting each time. I know I said this above but the foaming was so far superior with DP that there simply was no contest. I just thought of another way to describe how thick the foam is with DP. With little effort and just a few passes I can make my entire cowl and wiper area disappear under a blanket of foam where it looks like the windshield just flows onto the hood.

The DP Xtreme shampoo has crazy dilution instructions for the foam gun, it comes out to 6 oz./gallon. When I dialed it back to a normal 1 oz/gal (which is the bucket wash ratio) it didn't seem any more "extreme" than any other wash I use in my foam gun.

Interesting review. When you were judging cleaning ability, did you just test each, rinse, and test another?

I only have Mothers and 901 but 901 has a very tacky feel (almost gel like). The both feel about the same in pure lubricity to me between the fingers but this is very subjective.

I had assumed 901's tackiness was by design so the suds would stick more to the paint. It seems to rinse off in mass for me but no idea if some is left behind that could affect the sheeting action you wanted. This may explain why 901 did not do well using your criteria.
