Serious recall of many dog and cat food brands

I know many of us have pets that we love dearly. If you have not heard yet Menu Foods the manufacturer of numerous popular brands of pet food, including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba (as well as many store or "house" brands) have recalled items due to the potential of it causing renal failure and possibly death to cats and dogs.

I know of one person whose dearly beloved dog died from kidney failure due to this.

Mike if I am not mistaken..I believe it was some sort of Bacteria that came in on one of the ingredients...sorta like the other recall on the corn fungus on the dry foods...

taken from ABC News: Pet Owners Report 241 Deaths from Food: Vet



"Thus far, the deadly contaminant in the food has not yet been identified. However, the pets who have been sickened and died show signs of kidney failure. The toxic food also appears to have more of an effect on cats than dogs."



Then they state:



"Monday, the Food and Drug Administration said it believes that the wheat gluten used in the pet foods may have somehow become contaminated with mold or another toxin. The ingredient was used in plants in Kansas City and New Jersey.



When the manufacturer tested the food from these plants on between 40 and 50 animals, 10 died."



Very sad news indeed! I can't imagine trying to nurse your sick animal from a sickness not knowing that the food you are trying to force them to eat is the poison that is killing them :angry :cry:

This is very sad ...this is the second toxic food recall in a year...I am not a big fan of grocery store brand foods...My dogs get a raw diet of chicken and lamb.. Yes they get raw chicken and lamb...and for dry food they get either Timberwold...Flynt River..Innova..Wellness..



they also get veggies...carrots..brocoli..string beans..Peas..Apples..either fresh or frozen..



My Vet also a teaching Doctor at Tufts School of Vet Medicine and is a big advocate of Raw diets..She said grains like corn and wheat are used as fillers and spoil fast in dry foods..and a dog or cat benifit more from a raw diet than poor processed foods....you would puke if you knew what went into dog foods..thats why I get food that is stated as human grade food..no meal..by products.road kill...just whole meat..but you pay for it also..



I hope very one checks thier foods and makes their dogs and cats safe....

twitch- Glad you posted that. I'd assumed that everybody already knew but that was probably wrong.



This made me glad we switched brands, we had been buying Nutro until Accumulatorette did a bunch of research back when our one dog got cancer (which he beat). Interesting to me that the problem is related to wheat gluten...one of the things we decided following her research was that dog/cat food shouldn't contain *grains* period.

The manufactor ordered there product from another supplier, iirc the culprit that is responsible for the death of 10 animals is called wheat glucan
 
So unfortunate. A coworker of mine had to put his 13 year old dog down over the weekend for kidney failure. He was being fed one of the brands on the list.



Interesting to hear that grains are to be avoided. I didn't know that.

No, sorry. My wife did the research (a while ago) and she's out of town so I can't even ask where she found the info. The general gist of it is that in the wild felines/canines simply don't eat grains so we shouldn't feed them to our cats/dogs,but most commercial pet foods are very heavy on grain because it's cheap and easy to process. There are some pretty compelling arguments about how unhealthy grain-heavy diets are and my wife was doing good research (not just a "latest weird fad that sounds interesting").



We switched to Innova brand pet food, made by Natura. I bet there's some website of theirs that would give their $0.02 about it (and why their stuff is so wonderful, of course ;) ), check out www.naturapet.com



Again, I'm sorry I don't have any better info for you. But with the astronomically high rates of cancer in domestic pets, hearing that the typical diet might be to blame sure got our attention and might be worth a little looking into.
 
Accumulator great choice in food I feed my Shebly Innova EVO mixed with Chicken soup for the pet lovers soul (large puppy breed) 1/4 cup each. She loves it and her coat is soft and silky. Dogs/cats do not eat corn and other grains, it's just not part of there natural diet. Have you even seen or heard of a starving dog raid a farmers feilds for food? Nope. Like Accumulator's wife, I also did a lot of research in this area. My Shih Tzu is on Wysong's senior formula dry food, and then gets his share of "people food" as a wet food topper. This recall is about the third that I know of in about eighteen months. For me, it was shocking, in the scope of how bad this was in the way of deaths, but it wasn't really a surprise. This was bound to happen. For the rest of you that may be interested, there is an excellent book on this subject, called Food Pets Die for: Shocking Facts About Pet Food, by Ann M. Martin. Link Here - I ordered mine from Amazon (link here) - read this book and you won't look at commercial pet food the same way again.
 
Len A- Thanks for posting that about Martin's book :xyxthumbs I'll ask my wife if she read that one and, if not, we'll probably order it up.
 
Accumulator - you're welcome. Just don't read it when you're planning to eat. Some of the info, to be polite, will ruin your appetite. And I'm someone who spent ten years calling on the manufacturing side of the people food business!
