Sealant over Glaze

Hi guys,

Is it ok to apply a sealant such as DG 105 over a glaze like RMG or Vanilla Moose? I've read about glazes in this forum and it seems like a majority always apply carnauba over glaze as LSP.

I plan to apply RMG or VM, then DG 105 for durability then finally Natty's Blue for depth and wetness. What do you guys think?

Sure, you can do it, but it won't provide optimal durability. The finish look will be great, but the oils that are in the glaze will not allow the sealant to bond correctly to the paint.

You would do better (for durability's sake) to apply your sealant over something without any fillers.

Thanks Jason. What if I were to apply a sealant like DG 105, then a glaze then Natty's carnauba - would this be a better sequence both for durability and looks?

Sure, you could do that. The only thing you have to watch for is some glazes have cleaners and/or light abrasives in them which would remove the sealant.

Since you mentioned VM and RMG, I would lean toward using RMG because, ime, it has less cleaners in it. Both contain a lot of solvents and stuff though, so I don't know if you will be able to preserve all your sealant but you could give it a try.

Anytime you go the glaze/wax route you will end up with a high maintenance finish. It will look great, but you will have to apply something fairly often.

Imo, I would just do the glaze and carnauba and not worry about the sealant. To maintain it, just put on a fresh coat of wax every other week or so.

No problem! Try to post some before and after pics when you are done! I'd love to see how your car turns out.

On another topic, will applying Aquawax and later on DG 521 QD affect depth and wetness of Natty's blue or do I have to use a carnauba-containing QD?

That, my friend, is something you will have to play with to find out. Everyone has their favorite qd's for different applications, and the only way to find the one that will work best will be to try a few out.

May want to look into the Danase Wet Glaze or Chem. Guys EZ Creme glaze. I believe both are acrylic and will not affect bonding with sealants.

EX-P work over RMG

I have used the EX-P, RMG, Natty's Blue combo for a long time

but EX-p is not have the best durability

so if you have to buy something I hear good things about the Danase Wet Glaze

So far, the most durable sealant I have used to date is CG's JetSeal 109. This stuff is amazing, and actually has some slight filling properties of its own too.

Nope. Both carnauba waxes and glazes have oils in them. The oils are what keeps the sealants from properly bonding to the paint.

Thats true but if I am not mistaken the DWG does not have fillers which is why most people use a glaze.

That's true, generally. But I have used Opti-Seal over a well-cured Souveran and it was awesome in appearance.

I had been told by Optimum that you can use OS over carnauba. OS hasn't been on long enough yet to comment from personal experience on durability/bonding, though....

The three main WOWO products, ZCS, OS, and UPGP can all be applied over nubas. I apologize I thought that was well known.

Even so, I suspect that durability is affected.
