Scrubby sponge vs. Black Navigator.....oh boy.

I have a client that wants me to detail her black navigator....no big deal except for the fact the she used the back of a scrubby sponge to try to take off love bugs. You know...the green part on the back of the sponge.....

Now the mirrors are dull, the front bumper and a few spots on the front fenders have been marred up pretty bad. Just wondering if anyone has ever had to fix anything like this?

I told her I could get most of it out, but not sure I could get all of it. (I only have a PC...no rotory) There are no deep scratches....just looks like it was wet sanded.

I was going to try a 4" orange pad with OC first to try to remove what I could....then hit it with FPII...then maybe some RMG....then souveran.

Anyone have to fix this before?....BTW..the love bugs came off.:grinno:

Consider 3000 grit sanding the areas to make the marks more uniform and easier to remove... follow with a 4" pad and IP or HTEC/OP mix, I'm not sure if OP will have sufficient cut.

Last time I fixed a car that was cleaned with a scrubby, I used wool pads and powergloss at 1500+ rpm:nervous2: it was an Audi though.

For the whole truck, you might want to go with IP or even Presta UCCL - huge time savers on a big truck like that - OP takes a looong time to break down (note I havent tried UCCL with a 4" pad yet but it works great via rotary, and a PC with 4 inchers can generate similar heat, plus Presta products are cheaper than dirt).

thanks guys.....looking at it of course it looks bad, but as I "gently" ran my nail over the area, it didn't have any catches to make me think they were deep scratches.....as in she didn't scrub that hard.

Timmah......I've never wet sanded before, so the thought of doing that to a customer's car is makes me a little nervous. I may try it on my car first. :) I don't have any IP, but I think I may get some. That product is more aggressive than Optimum Compound?

i would get something other than OC to remove the wash marks....optimum takes tooo long to break down and you will be there all day on just the hood. Try something like high temp extreme cut...finishes down almost LSP ready and will cut more and faster and break down faster than OC, even with a PC!!! I have done a side by side and the HTEC side was finished in half the time and cleared more defects and finished lsp ready!

i did it on a toyota with relatively soft paint and I went with PG on a cutting pad, then IP, then RMG, then EX sealant...the results were 90% new! but this car could have used a repaint!

thanks guys..... I think I may have to run to the store today to grab some more supplies.

I don't have the more aggressive stuff you guys are talking about, so I think I'll swing by PAC and pick up some goodies.

another question is what is the thickness of the paint like on mirrors? Just don't want to stay on them too long....
