ScratchX?

Hello everyone,

I have a black Camaro that I bought used; it has two big scratches in it down to the primer, and a small dent in the rear quarter panel. I know I can’t fix these so I’m going to take it to the shop for repairs. However there are small scratches all over the car, I don’t trust myself to buy a PC, how do I get these out. I was thinking of washing it, using ScratchX on the whole car, clay it, then Zaino it. Do you think this would work? Also could I use cheap wal-mart MF’s to apply the ScratchX?

Thanks,

Chad

Take everything I say with a big grain of salt because I'm pretty new at this, but ...

I'm thinnking the order of how you'd do this instead is:

-Wash

-clay

-ScratchX or maybe a different Polish

-seal with Zaino.

I'm not 100% sure if ScratchX would be ideal to apply over the entire car. I've only seen it sold in a small tube so even if it's the best product for you I wonder if it's cost effective. Maybe there would be a polish that would be less abrasive that would work on the majority of the imperfections and for anything else that it didnt' get you could try the scratchX?

First things first, your car is black. Black is absolutely the color that shows the most scratches, dings, dents, and any other imperfection in your paint. My car is black, so given my experience, scratchx does wonders on the paint. it really does make it look a lot better, but a black car will never look perfect (or even close to it) without a PC. its just not possible. Scratchx will lower many of the scratches, but if you really look, you can still see them. Mostly, it just takes down the white edges of the scratch, and makes it look like you have a hair on your paint or something.

You could definately scratchx the whole car, but the best method of using scratchx is by doing about a 6 inch by 6 inch square 2-3 times, at about 3-4 minutes a time. Basically, it would take you forever. Before i would even attempt that, i would get a PC. I use scratachx all the time for nasty spots that need to be fixed, but i wouldnt dream of doing a whole car with it, it would just take too long.

check this out. It may help with some scratchx issues. Mainly, just dont think that scratchx will solve all your problems, cause iit wont. Just enter into the project with rational expectations, and i think you will be pleased. Best of luck.

I'll have to agree that going over your whole car with Scratch-X would take forever.

But.... until you get a PC here is a link on how to use Scratch-X in spot applications by Mike Phillips with Meguiar's.

I think if you also read that link by Prometheus it will help you set your goals more realistically. He did a good job in documenting his experience.

Good Luck!

Doing things by hand is certainly possible - it just takes more effort and time on your part, that's all. Your choice.

I would get the bodywork done first before proceeding with your detail and applying Zaino.

I don't mind paying for the PC, but I feel like I will screw up the paint with that. But lets say I got buy one, what polish would I use to get the swrils out? Thanks for all the help!

polishes for the PC, everybody has theri favorites. A lot of people use DACP from meg's (#83 i believe) and it works wonders form what ive seen, #9 is a good product, but its only for light stuff. THe 1z polishes seem to be popular too, so i dont think you could go wrong with any of the above. You can't really damage your paint with a pc. You would have to sit there holding it in one spot for a VERY long time before it did any real damage. BEst of luck.
