Scratch X info

I bought some Scratch-X today to add to my arsenal but now I'm not really sure I want to keep it. I just read in another thread that it hides scratches, no get rid of them and they will return after a wash or two. Is this true? Is Scratch-X nothing more than a glorified glaze? Some good info on this product would be great, thanks.

ScratchX is a Scratch Remover.

When I use it, and when I demonstrate it in front of a classroom, I can assure you, I am removing scratches, not merely filling them in.

Where did you read that ScratchX only fills them in?

I never had luck with *removing* any blemishes in my particular paint. At best it improved *minimally* but that was by hand only. I wonder if some paints requires its use by machine, as in at least by PC.

Two weekends ago, I conducted a clinic for the Miata club at Autorecon in Irvine, CA. A gentleman brought me his Miata that someone had set a box on the trunk lid and the pulled it off instilling both light and deep scratches into the paint.

Instead of showing how to remove them by machine, I demonstrated how to remove them by hand using ScratchX.

It took some elbow grease, but about 90% of the scratches were removed. This was over about an a rea of half his trunk lid, not a small section. I will try to locate the pictures.

This weekend, there is a clinic for 7thgencivic.com at Meguair's. If I have the opportunity, I will do my best to capture before and after pictures using ScratchX to *Remove* scratches from a clear coat.

Besides that, check out the below taken from,

Scratch X and MPPC?

Use a clean, foam applicator pad and some elbow grease and work direction on the scratches. Make sure you clean and clay the area first.

In the last two weeks I have demonstrated how effective ScratchX is by hand on clear coat paint using a foam applicator and a little elbow grease. This is not a "Wipe-on", "Wipe-off" product, you have to work it.

Check out the before and after pictures of a bird dropping etching on a clear coat that were almost completely removed by hand using ScratchX.

Just so you know, I demonstrated Meguiar's philosophy of always using the least aggressive product to get the job done. For the bird dropping, I first used Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, which is a chemical paint cleaner only.

I then demonstrated Meguiar's Clear Coat Body Scrub, which is both a chemical cleaner and a diminishing abrasive. The results were even better.

Then I applied the ScratchX and when I was through, you could hardly tell where the bird etching had been.

The pictures don't do the results justice, but the ScratchX is effective if you put a little elbow grease and passion behind the applicator pad.

Here's the same scratch after using ScratchX:

Like I mentioned, I didn't get a picture after using the ScratchX, but it was almost impossible to tell where the bird etching was previously. Point being, removing a bird drop etching and a scratch are the kind of the same thing, you're removing paint in an effort to level the paint and restore a smooth glossy finish.

It would be great to see a Meguiars Audi day some time. Although it's impossible for me to be there I would really like to read about it and learn to properly use Scratch X by hand using this kind of car as a subject.

Good, I'm glad to hear that it's just not a bunch of fillers. I'm not sure where I read that it had fillers in it but it was somewhere on this board. What kind of difference would it make if I used a terry applicator vs. the foam applicator, out of curiosity?

There are a lot of guru's out there offering sage wisdom as though they're chemists, don't believe everything you read posted to a forum.

As far the difference between foam and terry cloth goes, terry cloth is more abrasive compared to foam, it offers a little more bite, or aggressiveness and compliments the abrading ability of the product your using.

This can be a good thing or a bad thing. If your working on a clear coat, which are typically harder yet scratch-sensitive, then it can be a bad thing. Terry cloth can help to give your paint cleaner more bite, and thus remove the defects quicker, but it may leave micro-scratching behind that will have to be removed.

On a single stage, because these types of paints tend to be softer and less scratch-sensitive, terry cloth will increase your paint cleaners cleaning ability without leaving behind noticeable fine scratches.

Two cars I have hand rubbed out recently are the 1986 Bronco II with ColorX, (single-stage), and the 1947 Plymouth Coupe, (basecoat/clear coat finish), using ColorX followed by NXT.

When the Meguiar’s severs come back up I can include links to these to details.

So, if I used a foam applicator that had terry cloth on top of it, it would be more agressive than a regular foam pad? Im just wondering how big the difference between a foam pad and a terry covered foam pad is.

Yes.

The nap, or little cotton loops that make terry cloth what it is, can act as a mild abrasive, giving your product of choice a little more bite. A lot of how aggressive, or how non-aggressive your applicator material is depends upon how much elbow grease you put into it.

Whether or not your terry cloth is by itself, or has foam behind it doesn’t matter, it's what comes into contact with the surface that matters.

I don't know about the scrathX removing small scratches but on my 03 camry I had stains in the paint that would not come out with regular wash, scratchX got them all out. I then did the whole car, I may do it every 6 months now but probably just on the hood, top and trunk, the sides were pretty clean.
