Sap stains or clear removal?

Customer came in and said she had sap on her trunk and could not get it off, she finally used hot water and removed it. The trunk on this Infinity now has four approx 1/4" diameter grey spots where the sap was located. They feel rough and no sap remains. Do you think I should try and polish this area and see if it gets any better or is the clear "toast"? It is hard to imagine it could get worse. Sorry no pictures.

I would try and polish it and see what happens. it sounds like it sure etched into the paint, just remains to be seen how deep it went. either way I would be careful and not remain in that area too long or use too much pressure as to burn through the clear. you can try some clay after washing the area, then a paint cleaner first then move on to a polish, if you really want to be safe but it does sound like the area will need to be polished if the area is to be fixed. no harm in starting out on the lighter side of aggressive and working your way up to a more aggressive solution.

Flatstick, that's what I was thinking, not much to loose here. When I look at scratches on a car and am not sure I always say, "I can make it better, but probably not perfect" then they aren't dissapointed.
