Sanding Polished Aluminum Wheels - Can I?

I have a set of non-clearcoat polished aluminum wheels I need to clean up. These things are in bad shape. I was wondering if I could just sand the heck out of them because there is no clearcoat. Even if I ended up with a brushed aluminum finish the wheels would look MUCH better than they do now. Is there any reason I shouldn't take 800 grit to the rims, other than poor surface finish?

Thanks!!

Mike,

Dont use sandpaper at all. PPG makes a product, or you could use alumaprep which is acidic. You spray it on, rinse it off, then use a polish to shine them up. If you email me at work (eric@lakecountrymfg.com) I can give you the number.brb. I have some here. Its PPG DX 533 (aluminum cleaner). It needs to be dilluted but it works awsome.

Thanks, Eric! I just did a little reading on Alumiprep and PPG DX533. If that stuff can't do the job, nothing can.

Thanks again,
