Rubber surround on sub?

I was detailing my Jeep last night and thought about putting some Megs Protectant on the surround on my sub. I thought twice about it b/c I wasnt sure what it would do. Im not even sure what type of rubber it is.



Anyway, has anyone ever done this? Will it hurt/help anything? I have megs ASD and megs Natural shine.



Its a 12in 7500 MTX sub.

Well, here's my opinion as an audiophile for 37 years, audio equipment reviewer for various e-zines and audio shop owner for a few years.



The general concensus about treating speaker surrounds is to avoid Armor All or other silicone based dressings as it can leech chemicals out of the rubber (not my experience). Many audiophiles use 303 Protectant or vegetable based glycerine products.



But there are also those audiophiles who have been using Armor All for years without any problems.



Another thing to consider is where you live. If you are in a high humidity environment then mildew can also break down rubber. In these cases many use baby powder on the surrounds.



Personally, I use 303.
 
my friend suggests that most protectants will be dangerous to the other materials on the speaker, like the cone, the glue/adhesive that holds it together.



He alos says unless it is applied with perfect uniformity, then during operation, the subwoofer will eventually warp the surround in the areas the protectant didn't spread over uniformly.



He builds $10,000 speakers, so take that for whatever its worth...
 
ok, thanks for all the responses guys. Ill just just leave it be. Ive never heard of anyone putting anything on the rubber anyway and they never complain about the rubber breaking down over time. It just popped into my head as I was putting protectant on some plastic in the trunk.



I love the smell of a freshly detailed interior. Megs Natural shine smells so good. :cool:
