Rotten Produce odor....

Ok, to make money, i work in a produce dept at Ukrops (big richmond Grocery chain)... Ok, well, about a week ago, i hauled some Icerberg lettuce in the back. Well, one must have fallen out.

Two days ago, i noticed a pungent odor. First like dried blood, then like old tuna. Well, low an behold, a nice juicy brown head of lettuce was in a corner of my trunk. About knocked me out. :shocked

Well, so far, I have used Prestones Carpet cleaner (with the little brush on top). Then, I sprayed it down with Auto Freebreze.

I wondered if anyone else had any tips on more ways to get the smell out or beter ways. Im looking for local products, readily available.

I would like to clean the whole interior, but kinda lost at what to use. I like this prestone stuff, and heard good stuff about it. I also heard a trick today to use watter and a little bit of Comet Bleach powder (i have a black interior....dont think this was safe, but said to do wonders).

Could someone help me out? Before I pass out?

Find a carpet cleaner that has enzymes that break down odors, not mask them. I believe 303 Carpet Cleaner and Zep High Traffic Carpet Cleaner (at Home Depot) will do the trick. Mist the area with a little water. Spray the solution slightly saturating the area. Let sit for a minute or so. Scrub with a brush real well. Let sit. Shop Vac it up real well. Rub with an old towel to help dry. Repeat steps. Let completely dry this time. Sprinkle with baking soda. Let sit for a while (over night). Vacuum real, real well. Spray a little Auto Febreeze for good measure. Wipe down your whole trunk with a damp cloth and a little all purpose cleaner like Simple Green or something, just to wipe off any surface odor and spruce up the area. Go to Bed Bath and Beyond and buy a small bag of lava rocks in a mesh bag for $6.99 made by Gonzo. Toss it in your trunk. It absorbs odors. If you can, park your car in a garage and leave the trunk open overnight or for as long as you can. It helps to air it out. Guaranteed odor free!

My grandmother had a major leak in her Honda (now one of my cars) and the entire passenger side carpet was drenched for weeks and mold and mildew grew in there! I did what I just mentioned plus I pulled up the carpet and washed down the floor board with Simple Green Industrial Anti Bacterial Disinfectant all purpose cleaner. The carpet is now spanking clean and totally fresh feeling and smelling. It's like brand new. I also wiped down the whole interior with the Simple Green and a wet rag, then dressed everything with #40.

I might have to try some of those steps on my interior. It doesn't smell horrible, just has kinda a strange odor that seems to be amplified when it's hot out.

I especially like this thing, it'll work great on my seat that smells kinda funky:

Well, heres what i did...

After work (arround 3:30PM) I let it sit for about two hours, open, to air out. The smell is NOTICABLY leess now.

Tommrow, my plans to far are to go, and remove everything from trunk (including spare and everything, and the carpet mat). Im then going to wipe down the metal with a diluted mix of a simple degreaser (like simple green). Then, will wipe down the carpet sides, to c,ean them up. Then use some norm carpet cleaner (or actually, that Zep stuff mentioned above by spilchy), baking soda. Ill let it sit over night, into labor day, and then vacume, Auto Frebreeze, and sit open. Ill then prob get some of those lava rocks, and just drive arround for a few days with them.

I plan then, maybe even labor day too....to use some Prestone Carpet cleaner on the itnerior of the car too. When i did my big detail recently, i didnt get to the interior :(

One question, will degreaser like SG hurt the carpet back there?

Thanks so much guys, and waan here more

Eric.

It can be used on leather but I would not use it on the "face" part of the leather. In other words I would and have used the products from the link I submitted on the underside of leather seats and also injected the liquid nuetralizers into the leather, in a out of the way place obviously, using the needle and syringe in the picture that was posted by "EMTfirefighter"

If you have an odor that is unpleasant coming from leather seats itis almost always within the foam (or it could be too much Taco Bell!!) so to destroy and not just cover up the odors you must kill the odor causing bacteria which is caused by some spilled milk, rotting food juice or some other organic material that was not fully and completley cleaned up and has been left to, in a word, "ferment":shocked This fermenting crud has found its way into a crevice or soaked into the foam of a seat or cushion and within a day or two is making itself known. You can shampoo and spray deodorizers all day long but unless you kill the "cause" it will just return. That's where the injector comes in. You fill it up with the correct enzyme product and inject it as needed. Within a few hours you should notice a big difference although it may require a few follow up treatments.

Ok, i got that Zep cleaner. But that all sounds like a days process. Like, i woudlnt be able to start tongiht. I think ill wait till friday afternoon, and start it (so i can treat the area a few times)

Im going to throw a flow-thru box of baking soda in there now

Since Anthony brought it up, I'll re infoce the C.O.C Smoke. I use AutoInt's Odor Terminator on almost every car... when I suspect a BIG problem... C.O.C. seems to work every time. Leaves a cherrywood smell for 24 (?) hours...

Has turned out to be a nice combo for me .

Checkout the Bridgepoint.com website.

I didn't care for the leather stuff, but...

Wow..

Well, the smell is mostly gone due to the length of time and letting it air out all the time.

Well, I also went last night, and sprayced it down with Zep, then brushed, then did it again, and covered the area with baking soda/

This morning, i went back and vacumed it up, and about to go back outside to spray some freebreze.

I think I may use moer of that Zep stuff, and baking soda, on the entire interior, just to get everything sparkly black!
