Rotary -- Where to start with plate + pads?

Okay here is my situation. I just purchased a Vector look-a-like rotary polisher...

1. I am going to wetsand my car since I just painted it about 1.5-2 months ago. It can be found here. Single stage polyurethane enamel. Plus after I will be polishing and giving it a LSP.

2. Which backing plate is the best? I was thinking about purchasing a 6" Lake Country flexible backing plate...

3. For pads I was originally planning on using Meguair's Wool pad to take off wetsanding marks and the rest with their foam pads, but I've heard about the new EDGE 2000 system. I don't think EDGE makes a wool pad to remove wetsanding marks right?

4. Availability is a big factor. Anyone know where I can get these products up here in CANADA?

Please help direct me in the proper direction.

I plan to use these products...

- Megs #84 with a wool pad
- Megs #80 with a polishing pad
- Megs #80 with a finishing pad
- Megs #21 Wax.......by hand or finishing pad?

- Michael P.

you're process looks pretty good but I'd use a PC with Megs 80 with a finishing pad to remove any hollogramming. Yes, Edge does make wool pads. If you already have a backing plate you might be able to find an Edge wool pad at a local paint supply shop. Otherwise use the Megs pads.

We absolutely DO!:)

Dedication to Detail - The Edge Buffing Pads

I vote the Edge system for the rotary...I started using it some time back and its the best so far that I have used...the Velcro was OK but getting the pads on centered can be a hassle...also with the two sided Edge pads you can turn it over if it gets clogged up or you want to switch products...they do have a wool pad for cutting the sand marks..I have one very effective...as to where they are up your way..we have a few members on here that might be able to help in that area...good luck!

I don't have any pad or any backing plate/system yet.

Thanks I didnt know Edge had any wool pads...

So I guess I am gonna decide on which system to purchase...And where I can get it in Canada or get it shipped from USA...

Darn.

By the way, if I go the EDGE 2000 route, can you guys specify which pads for each step I need?

Would it be like this?

- Megs #84 with an Edge W300 Heavy Cut Wool pad
- Megs #80 with an Edge ??? pad
- Megs #80 with an Edge ??? pad
- Megs #21 Wax an Edge ??? pad

THANKS folks! :dcrules

So I guess I am slow. I saw this wicked wetsanding thread on Meguiars Online...

Meguiar's Online - 1949 Ford Country Squire - Wetsand, Cut & Polish

They were using the new Megs SOLO system. This could be one alternative I am seriously going to look into. Seems like it did an amazing job and not much to fiddle around with...

The only thing about it is that backing plate looks real small. I think its like less than 6"...???

I'm gonna look into if its worth getting. Anyone have thoughts about Megs SOLO?

the Solo polish is designed for fresh repaints only-not cured paint.

Whoops. I didnt see that. I guess I'll just sick with my process for now. Once funds come in, I'm gonna get "rotaring" :rockon

Actually I think I'm gonna try one half of my hood without wetsanding, and the other half with wetsanding and the process done. If it still comes out nice, I might just skip wetsanding since I figure compounding is going to remove some paint anyway...

But the places where there is major orange peel, I have to wetsand.

Now I just gotta find a place to purchase all the goods. Being in Canada is hard :surrender

So I have a new question...

I recently acquired 3M Perfect-It II Foam Polishing Pad Glaze - Dark on sale.

I was wondering if I could use this in place of my original thoughts of using Meguairs #80 Speed Glaze after taking off wetsanding marks with a wool pad and Megs #84 Compound.

Can I use the 3M Perfect-It II Foam Polishing Pad Glaze - Dark in substitue to Megs #80 Speed Glaze?

Thanks DC
