Rotary/ Makita users I have a question

Well Ive been tinkering with detailing for quite a while now and plan on buying a makita 9227C. I plan on working on my dads 1985 toyota van to practice on since its just used for going back and fourth to my grandfathers house, grocery getting etc.. I was wondering what sized pads do you professionals normally use on this machine? On my udm for correcting I range from 4-5.5inches on an orange pad with SIP. Now since this is a rotary should I be using a larger pad (5.5 in?) since its much stronger? I think a flex would be much more up my ally but its got a hefty price tag, plus i figure if i become skilled enough with the makita Id be saving my self some money etc. Any tips? thank you everyone.
 
With that machine I use 4 to 6.5 inch pads most of the time.

However 8 inch pads are good for vans.



The makita is your best friend. Will take all day everyday work load, doesn't slow down when you apply pressure and the RPM range is great

Literally start at hand speed and up to 3000
 
I have the makita and agree with SVR, it's a great machine. I have tried 6.5" pads from LC and 8" ones from Edge, until I tried the 7.5" 3M pads I would have said to get the LC pads - now, I believe the 3M are a little better, especially if you get their Ultrafina SE - you have to get their blue pad that goes with it. The standard blacking plate that comes with the makita will work fine on the 3M pads.
 
I agree with what has been stated. I generally start with a 7-8 inch pad on the roof, hood and trunk, then move to a 5-6.5 inch to get everything else, then hit the pillars and smaller spots if need be it with a 3 inch
 
Very rarely will I use a 4" pad on a rotary...its pretty easy to burn thru, so I avoid it as much as possible...i stick with 5.5" and 6.5" pads with rotary...
 
Keep in mind on a rotary 4" pads have less cut. It is the exact opposite of a PC or UDM because the edges of a smaller pad are moving slower.
 
I've done 3/4 of a strangely shaped car body with 4 inch pads before

It's quite safe to go up to 1500 rpm or more with them and they are so fun



However 5.5's are my second favourite.
