Why can i not control cutting pads with my makitta? Im using the edge2K 6" system and the optimum line.

I dont know what im doing wrong. It wants to skip/jump and do what it wants to do. Not only that but they create to much heat for my liking.

Are wool cutting pads easier to control?

I hear that they run cooler also, in my mind thats a big plus.

The Presta wool is cool running in comparison. Nor do they hop, skip, jump :)

Can you link the site for me?

Now im assuming that wool has different cuts just like foam, right?

Should i be lookin for a specific kind of wool? Are there different types of wool?

Harder pads just behave that way with a rotary. I've generally found that I don't need a cutting pad to get good correction except for in situations with really bad or really hard paint though. With a pad like the Propel/Optimum Green (closest thing in the Edge line is the Blue) and a polish like HT Extreme Cut or OHC, I can correct most things with no buffer hop or overheating whatsoever.

I do remember someone (maybe tdekany?) recommending using an Orange pad on a PC for about 5min to soften it up and then switching it over to the rotary. Haven't tried that yet, but that might also be an option for you.

This is what i did with edge blue and OC and OP. To be honest i probably didnt even need the OC.

I want to learn how to wet sand so i need to learn to use a cutting pad of some kind.

I really wanna try wool, i just dont know anything about wool. This site seems to shy away from wool pads so there isnt a whole lot of reading i can do here to figure it out.

Coupe, these pads are very specific and require the EDGE adapter. I guess you can buy single-sided Preata pads, but they don't use the EGDE adapter

It's a little confusing and the mfr has done nothing to clarify what's what, IMO. Heck, they don't even answer their email inquiries. I guess it's a big secret.

I ended up ordering these parts thru my local body shop supply guy...no big deal. Order on-line? I've been told you need to know a secret handshake or some crap like that.

Search on "Presta". You'll see 2 - 3 very recent threads spearheaded by "rydawg". He's the man that showed us the magic. :D

There are some pictures and details here (from me): http://autopia.org/forum/detailing-...30-thoughts-lsp-following-presta-workout.html

Enjoy.

Yikes, what happened to that blue car, Coupe? :(

The Presta pads are very forgiving and quite easy to work with. I hadn't used wool for years...never had any success with it and was worried about it. These new Presta pads have changed all that.

Try to view some of rydawg's work...a blue Ford Escort and a black Pontiac SSE...your eyes are gonna bug out!

Sorry but im not gonna go on the hunt for unicorns (dont have that kinda time), i need to find wool pads from some other company then that are easy to order from and dont play games like that.

Im not sure what you mean about the edge adapter, i have 2 for my makitta and 2 for my PC.

I'm very pleasantly surprised you were able to achieve that level of correction with the Edge blue.

Nice work... I'll have to try that combo (Blue pad and compound). I usually only use that one for final polish.

Im very interested in Presta but from what your saying they dont sound like an easy company to deal with.

The only reason i used the blue is becuase its the only one i can control :lol

OHhh, sorry about that...thought it was somebody else's. :grinno:

Make some telephone calls to the body shop supply houses...it may not be too tough to find.

BTW, MALCO = PRESTA

If you read the labels on the bottles I posted pictures of, you'll find ALL critical info + P/Ns.

At a minimum, I'd recommend the blue and green pads, adapter, #1500 polish and the UCCLight. Ryan suggests following with a swirl mark remover and then your preferred LSP.

I agree the softer pads are easier to contol with the rotary.

But...they will also allow you to correct and leave less marring than with a cutting pad. I see this as the best of both worlds.

So, as usual from reading this forum, I learned something new to try that could really help to minimize steps and make paint correction more efficient.

Im gonna check with my local PBE's. Hopefully they can supply me with what i need or at least get it for me.

IMO, for a car in good condition, the Presta pads + polishes could be the ultimate time-saving routine. Bonus: the paint is far cleaner and glossier than any other series of products I've used. Saving time is a big deal to me.

Yeah, I know. There's no end, huh? ;)

Enjoy, and please do report back with your impressions. :up

(FWIW, I paid around $19 ea for the pads, $18 for the adapter. I got little 8ozs bottles of the three polishes/SMR for $35 shipped. You should see if your local guy can order the small bottles....they'd last most folks a long time. Otherwise, you're buying qts. or larger.)

If you did this with a blue foam pad, there's no doubt in my mind that you'd pick up wool padding very quick!! It's actually easier than using a foam pad and cut down/level much easier and cleaner. Soft foam pads, because they are spongier, have a tendancy to cushion into or dig into the finish, making them more prone to bounce and hop. You really won't get that when you use a wool pad. Don't be afraid to try it.

Isn't this really just a EDGE pad offered by Presta? I don't think Presta makes pads, they might just get private labeled ones from the manufacturer. Just like this Auto Magic/EDGE pad below:

$19 for a buffing pad is 2-3 times the norm for a EDGE, LC or Hi-Buff pad. You might want to check into that to save some money.
