I am going on a trip soon, and plan on putting a rooftop luggage carrier on my roof rack for the trip. Lots of stuff to take with a 6-month old. Does anyone have any advise for how to prep the roof for the nylon bag? I don't want to scratch up my roof if possible. Is there some kind of a pad available to fit in the gaps of the roof rack? This is on a GMC Envoy by the way.



I did use the "search" function, but couldn't find anything under "rooftop" "roof luggage" or "roof". So, I did try!

I want to take this to the top to hopefully get a little help.



Surely I'm not the only one who puts these luggage bags on the roof of their car. How do you prevent scratches? It moves around a little at 70 mph.

I cannot imagine any possible way of avoiding scratches. I would get a hard shell rooftop carrier or rooftop basket by Yakima or Thule. Both will make special adapters for your factory racks. If you don't like the price, consider the price of the rooftop bag ($40-$80) and then add the price of a serious detail ($150-$300) to remove all travel related scratches. Just think about when you used to fling things on the trunk to get something out of a bag. Even that left scratches and that is 1 minutes or less with 4 pounds or less. Now add hours, road filth, and a LOT of weight.



Something to ponder.
 
I agree with thinksnow. Get a high quality heavy duty conversion kit to get EVERYTHING way off the roof. I've used both Thule and Yakima racks. They're the best you can buy and they have adapters for everything you could ever think of carrying.



The alternative for traveling with a 6 month-old -- a Dodge Hemi Quad Cab pickup. :D

Good point. I've used this type of carrier too. It makes for easier loading than throwing stuff on the roof.

Lots of good info here on hard shell carriers. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to go that route. I'm thinking of laying down the rubber shelf paper on the roof and place the bag on top of it. (Sticky side up). Hopefully that will help protect the roof.
