There is a documentary available on MSN with the announcement of Davy Jones' death.
I watched the whole thing - they were allowed to sing the parts in the studio, but probably studio musicians recorded the music track.
Poor guys were signed for $400/week each, no royalties from all the paraphernalia that was cleverly sold with their introduction. They sold more records than the Beatles and Elvis at that time..
Eventually they had to play when they started doing Concerts..
All their careers were controlled by Don Kirschner, who was a genius in many ways to the Rock and Roll music industry, but I think he had something for little girl bands or something.
Eventually they split up with Kirschner, the 2 guys who produced their I think 3-TV seasons, went on to produce "Easy Rider" with Peter Fonda, and others..
All went their separate ways,, but Davy Jones kept going on tour alone, to sing the old Monkees songs. He had just finished a show in Oklahoma in Feb. this year.
He had said he wanted to try to keep the band together by touring and singing their old songs..
