Rims

Hey guys,

I have an 2008 Mercedes C350. The rims are 17's and I typically just clean them with just soap and water. The front wheels come very clean and the back come clean too and look spotless from a distance. However, of course when I am cleaning them I can see some stubborn spots where it looks like some brake dust is caked on good...kind of speckles ranging in size. What should I use to get this off. I have some wheel and tire cleaner (foam) I believe eagle one makes it. I haven't tried it yet just wanted to get yall's opinions.

I'd avoid regular use of wheel cleaners if you can, especially the stronger ones like EO. Have you sealed the wheels? A good sealant goes a long way in preventing contaminants from bonding. How often are you washing the wheels?

I probably wash my car every week with just soap and water....paint and all is waxed. I have never sealed these wheels. I just bought it a few months ago and it had some speckles of brake dust just on the rear rims. I do not use the wheel cleaner all the time because I used to on my jeep and it seemed like it really made the wheels "dull." Anyways, I just want to know what product you would recommend to remove this.

Do you have pics?

Sonax wheel cleaner is something you can use. A lot of reviews on it and no complains from anyone but it's definitely one of the expensive choices.

I would recommend chemical guys Diablo gel since it's fairly priced and you can dilute it with water for extra mileage. I believe wax you used on your paint may help as well. I'm using optimum car wax on my rims (laziness) and it seem to protect some protection.

Pics would help. Can you tell us what type of wheels and what material? Are they clear coated? These are important things to know before trying different chemicals.

If typical wheel cleaners aren't handling these spots it might take some IronX or 3M Adhesive remover. But check for compatibility first.

If reasonable-strength Wheel Cleaners and/or other decontamination products don't do it, I'd just try some potent AIO such as ZAIO or Speed. Or abrade the stuff away with a compound/polish.

They are just stock benz wheels so clear coated. I am going to try some wheel cleaner tomorrow that I have and we will see if that works.

Sonax Wheel cleaner follow with Nanolex Paint and Alloy Sealant.

This will keep them cleaner longer and super easy to maintain.

Your next step will be to use mechanical polishing to remove the spots, as Accumulator has suggested. This could take some time and patience.

You may need to consider re-fininshing the problem wheels. I guess you need to decided how much it bothers you.

Wolf's makes a couple of stronger chems that would probably help, but may not reverse all the damage.

Weekly cleaning is pretty much required on these cars to keep the wheels looking their best. Coating or waxing the wheel may give a bit of relief.

I clean it once a week or so. I bought it used it is in mint condition besides the wheels. I may have them refinished one day or powerdercoated but as of now they still look good besides the little speckles you can see when up close
