Product: Specialty Motoring's Foam-Core Waffle Weave Microfiber Towel

Price & Price Per Ounce: $12.95 for a 16"x24" towel

Manufacturer Claims: We've secured a supply of the newest revolution in drying your vehicle. We are introducing this towel to detailing industry. The towel consists of two 16" x 24" waffle weave microfiber towels bound to a foam core. The resulting towel is super absorbent.

Packaging: The towel came sealed in a plastic bag. That plastic bag was packaged in SMP's standard packaging materials. I recieved this towel for free to test from Scott. He simply asked for my feelings on it. I chose to post this review on my own, no influence from SMP.

Color/Scent/Viscosity: Light blue towel with royal blue silk edges

How I used (as per instructions): I washed the cars tested on (some protected, some not) with TOL's Bubble Bath Car Wash, then rinsed using a standard nozzle.

I applied a light mist of Poorboy's Spray and Wipe to the whole surface (this reduces drying induced marring by creating a slicker surface for the towel to glide over), folded the towel twice, then wiped over the surface from front to back (the way the wind flows over when driving). The towel picked up 95+% of the water on the surface, only lacking where the silk edging touched the surface. As long as you overlapped your passes, you dried successfully.

Overall Thoughts: I like a few key things about this product:

- The foam core allows for more padding when drying. The weight applied by my hand is more evenly distributed over the surface and insures less drying-induced marring
- The towel passed the "CD marr test"
- The foam core allowed the towel to dry very fast by creating a space between both sides of towel. I found this towel to dry about a solid 2x faster than conventional WW towels when hung dry on my wiper (folded away from windshield)
- The smaller size of the towel doesn't matter as this towel holds the same amount of water as a 20"x40".

Other Notes: Prewash the towel with other MF's. Wash after each use using a mild detergent. Dry on low heat.

Questions/Comments, feel free.

I have orderd that towel should be here Fri. Good review, do you always spray the car with PB SW when you dry?

Paul: Yes, I do. Its a relatively inexpensive spray detailer that helps the towel glide over the surface better. I'm not one for disconnecting the nozzle, turning down the hose and flooding the surface. Then, blotting up remaining water.

PB spray and wipe inexpensive? It's not super expensive but I wouldn't waste it on drying. Have you tried Megs Detailer line Last Touch? Really good. I use it specifically for drying.

That statement sounds contradictory...Can you clarify?

its what i read on another review. Im asking if its true. Does the center foam act like a water holder that instead slings water ? & which make the WW sides wet >Im only asking & would like to know if the center core will actually work or make a big difference ?

I took advantage of a 5-gallon offer that Steve had a couple months ago. I picked up the pail for a song and a dance compared to if I were purchasing by pint, quart, or even gallon.

Miami Sunset: I can't see any of your posts...

Nice review Sean,
A quick question about the foam. Does it feel like its "part" of the towel or is it something that you think could eventualy wind up bunching up at one end. Kinda like the way an old pillow does.

I haven't taken a knife to a towel yet to dissect one. But, I can tell that the foam is bonded to the microfiber. You can't separate them. They also seem to hold up to hot water washes and low heat drying.

jaybs95: I know what you are saying and the answer is "No". I actually tried to pull the towel from the foam and was unsuccessful. I hope Scott can chime in about this, but I'm pretty sure there is a water-proof adhesive holding the parts together. I've had the towel for about a month and use it at least twice a week. There has been no degrading in its structure.

Sean,
you mentioned not flooding the car after the rinse, but doesnt this cause the towel to trail more water behind and not be able to dry the whole car? I can't imagine drying a car without flooding first, even if i were using the absorber.

Yeah, I sometimes will do that, but most of the times I just rinse it with a standard nozzle. I did this for this test so I could give the towel a workout. It left a lot of water on the surface to remove.

I try to put each product I test through the gauntlet. This insures that people won't be coming back and saying, "Hey this thing doesn't work, etc etc etc"...well, most of the time.
