REVIEW: XMT4

I was finally able to get to use my XMT4 today after a long week of teaching and detailing after school. Since there had already been a few reviews done w/ everyday vehicles, I decided to go a different route. A friend of mine has an old Mustang Mach One that he hopes to restore one. It has stayed outside 24/7 for the past 10 years. I also just got my first rotary in this week. It’s the one you heard others (Justin) talk about. I paid 30 dollars for it and love it. It’s a lot quicker and smoother than my PC, but not too powerful to damage really quickly. I did a few steps w/ the roof. I used XMT, Presta Ultra Cutting Crème light, DG 105, and finally Max Wax.

where can i get that rotary for 30 dollars

Harbor Freight tools website. It works great because it's strong enough to work faster and a lot smoother than the PC, but not so strong that you have to be too worried about damage.

So what speeds do you run it on? I was under the impression that the manual has no indication of what the I, II,III, IIII and so on mean as far as RPM? Others please chime in and let us know how y'all used the machine.

I have that same HF rotary but have not used it yet. Great work on the roof. XMT #4 looks like a great product.

I found this from and old thread.

Chicago Rotary settings.

Here goes:

1= 1000

2= 1400

3= 1800

4= 2200

5= 2600

6= 3000

The dial, however, is variable, meaning 1.5= 1200, 2.5= 1600,

I'm no expert, but in my opinion the Chicago Electric Rotary from Harbor Freight is complete garage! I think I would venture to say most of the Chicago Electric products from HF that I've purchased have let me down in one way or another.

I purchased one and after using it for only a short period of time it would only work if it was held sideways. Weird!

After returning it and getting a replacement the motor died and completely stopped working.

So I took that one back and received a third one which the variable speed dial began shorting out. All the low speeds, the ones I needed, were dead and the buffer wouldn't spin. The only thing that worked was the highest speed and then sparks would shoot out. After all the time and frustration messing with inferior tools I wish I would have purchased a better one to begin with.

I'm currently searching for a new one and I'm leaning towards a Mikita 9227C.
