Review: HD Polish

This was in participation of 3D's review program ongoing.

You may recognize this Jetta that I recently paint corrected and Opti-Coated. There were quite a few RIDs on this car but the swirls and scratches overall were minor, I had hoped to use a 1-step paint correction to avoid taking too much clear off but in the process I received HD Polish. I already had Optimum Hyper Polish and put them up against each other. Note neither got the results I had desired but I did learn quite a bit about HD Polish in the process.


Setup and Step-by-Step


Began by just a quick waterless wash with UWW and claying with Nanoskin fine grade towel

After using both here is my consensus
They have both have a similar level of cut but their application and dusting is what differed. In my opinion Optimum Hyper Polish is fantastic regarding dusting as there is absolutely none but to me I am not a fan of spray application after using it. I find that when spraying it it either sprays everywhere beyond the pad or comes out in a stream and doesn't evenly coat the pad. I've tried adjusting the spray nozzle but I can't seem to find that sweet spot, so right now when I spray the pad I do it over an empty box or in a garbage can. Now as for HD Polish it's just the same as any other polish, easy to figure out how much, priming the pad, etc... As for dusting there was minor dusting, nothing absolutely crazy but as compared to Optimum Hyper Polish this was a negative. One thing I did like quite a bit about HD Polish is that wipe-off is extremely easy it's nowhere near as oily as other polishes and just a simple wipe and buff leaves the surface clean and bare.

Overall I do like having HD Polish in the arsenal and it has it's pros and cons as compared to Optimum Hyper Polish but as for now until I try it on foam pads it sits slightly below it due to the dusting.

The color on the pads is from the polish. Optimum Hyper Polish is pink in color and stains the pads for some reason that wasn't removed by washing. It's not from the paint.

On a clear coated car there will be no color transfer from paint unless your burn through the clear coat. There's only paint transfer for single stage paints.

Usually 4-5 pea sized drops for first section then 3-4 for each additional section. I don't prime the pad (as in rub polish evenly over the surface) just put the drops on the outer edge and go at it-this is with foam or MF. If it's a firmer foam pad or the day is very hot and humid will use the higher amounts. Clean on the fly after everyother section. Can't take credit for this as these are the techniques recommended for HD products.
 
Nope, just 4-5 pea sized drops on the outer edge. Then 3-4 each additional section. Adjust for tem and humidity or working in the sun. This is recommended by HD.

Actually you can get color transfer from a vehicle with a tinted clear coat like Fords Red Candy. Your pads will turn red and you'll think you burned through the clear unless your familiar with this type of paint. I believe the term they use is tri-color for tinted clear coats.

I did not know that, thanks! I've heard of tint coat but did not know it would pull enough color to cause an effect like that. I know GM has a crystal red tint coat that is a very dark candy red type color with quite a bit of flake in it. And takes 3 types of paint instead of the usual 2. Good thing to research that before working on a vehicle.
 

Ec90 how did you prep the pads and polish for use? With HD polish I have found that less is more just like your LSP. Usually dusting comes from using to much product. Also working with a clean MF pad is very important. I always blow them out after each section pass to keep them clean. On something like that hood I would have made 4 sections.

for your future reference, crt will have color transfer if you ever polish it :)

For this time I used a Blue BnS pad and used 5 pea sized drops to prime the pad for the first section and it still dusted like crazy.

I'll read that and see if I can cut down on this dusting.

Edit: Maybe I need to try shaking it more or misting it with water or initially?
