Repair a PC UDM?

Hi Guys,

I bought the Ultimate Detail Machine which I understand is just a rebranded Porter Cable Unit. While I've hardly used the unit, but maybe 4 times over the past year, I went to use it today and there is something clearly wrong.

Basically any setting below 4 and the unit does not orbit at all with any weight on it. (Like simply holding it to the car). Alternately if I set the setting above 4 it will spin with some weight on it, but not very much and there is a burning smell.

I bought it from the Autopia storefront over a year ago so I expect its out of warranty so I'm curious if others have had this problem and can recommend a fix? If I can't fix this guy, its probably going to have to go down is my worst tool purchase ever. :hairpull Thanks for any help or insight.

You probably can't repair it, and it is a knockoff of the Porter Cable, not a re-badge. It doesn't share any internal components.

The good news is you can get the new Griot's Buffer for less than $110 shipped, and having just tested mine, you're going to like it a lot. It is an amazing machine.

UDM 1.0 (the knock off version of the PC) had switch and brush issues. These can be easily repaired. You could contact Perfect Shine and they probably can tell you what is wrong with it and if it can be fixed.

Hi Guys,

I don't have a problem with the switch that I can tell, looks like its squarely a brush issue. Anyway, I did contact PS and they are sending me a refurb unit in its place. Great service. Once I have a chance to evaluate, I'll follow up here for anyone else looking for info.

Thanks for the help.
