Removing Scratches From Stainless Steel

I messed up...

I have stainless steel, mirror finish, nerf bars on my truck. I used 2000 grit and wet sanded them to remove the grittiness they've accumulated over the last year from road elements and debris.

Prior to using sandpaper, I tried Never-Dull (did nothing), fine steel wool (did nothing), then 3M rubbing compound (did nothing). The grittiness was still there. Finally, I wet sanded the nerf bars and that took the grittiness away but now I am left with a smooth surface with a lot of fine scratches and the finish is dull. What can I use to get the scratches out and restore the nerf bars to the original mirror finish?

HD sells SS polish that may work. You will need a very high speed rotary (typically they have buffing wheels for drill but I dont think they spin fast enough). I just bought some for my polished SS exhaust (Mufflers and tips as the mufflers can be seen from the rear of my car).

I am going to give it a whirl soon ans see how it works!

I came across a bar of rouge for stainless recently, this would most likely need to be applied via felt polishing wheel and drill. I'll post if I can relocate where I saw it . It might have been Eastwood Co.

Eastwood def has it I'm sure and I found basically the same stuff at HD. At HD, it comes in a blue tube. I found it in the POWER TOOLS aisle (cubby). Same place they sell the PC's rotaries etc.

I will take before and afters. The mufflers are in pretty good shape so I wouldn't expect a major transformation, but the more I can get it to shine the better! I want it to be like a mirror!

Yeah, I have stuff like that too but the one I saw was strictly for stainless. I'm not sure if my HD has that kind.
