Removing leaf spots

I have a 93 red Toyota pickup that I would like to restore to some kind of a respectable appearance (real detailing would be a waste of time). It sits outside all year and has accumulated a number of leaf spots on the hood.

Normal paint cleaners and polishes don't seem to have much of an effect on these spots. Do I need to step up to one of the 3M compounds? If so, which one?

Thanks

Would it be possible to attach a picture?

Is it residue, or etching? Does it go out, or in, or is it totally flat?

Have you tried a solvent, like bug n' tar remover?

It's more of an etching, although I can't really feel much difference between the leaf spots and the surrounding areas.

I've tried a number of solvents with absolutely no success.

~One man’s opinion / observations ~

It ‘sounds’ like you need to step up to an abrasive if you’d had no success with solvent. Like polish and wax there are a lot of them out there, but a relatively easy one to use is Megs #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish (DACP) followed by Megs #9 Swirl Remover. If your working by hand as apposed to an orbital or rotary you could try Megs ColorX

~Hope this helps~

I had one or two of those once. I never really tried to remove them much... They finally came off in rotary land, a trip which would remove anything. I guess I'd agree that it is etching and that stepping up the abrasives should get it.

Following the autopian creed to try the least aggressive measures first, have you tried claying the surface?

As always, pics would help, and moving up the aggressiveness scale is always an option. But if there are leaf etchings, I'm sure there is other tree residue, and a clay job certainly sounds in order.

Claying did its usual great job cleaning all the surface stuff, bt the leaf spots are still there.

I've tried taking pictures, but I'd have to Photoshop them so much to show the spots that they probably wouldn't help much.

I'll try a couple of the things mentioned here and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for al the suggestions.

A little PIIC applied using the M1MB (Model 1 Manual Buffer) using gentle pressure cleaned them right up.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
