Removing adhesive

Hey all,

I had the chrome bumper inserts on my 02 mustang and I had to remove them because a few were falling off. When I removed them the 3M adhesive was stuck in place. I tried everything from goo gone to heating to nail polish remover with little or no results. Is there a product or way to remove this adhesive without ruining the paint?

Thanks

plastic scraper, getting as much off scraping as you're able without a chemical. Then the 3m adhesive remover or goof off if needed.

I have been told that WD-40 will remove adhesive from paint without doing any damage.

Hopefully someone will chime in who knows more about that. Yeah, goof off is lousy.

Yup, WD-40 can remove adhesive and tar and what not without damaging the paint but it can take quite a bit of elbow grease to get results.

Did you try using a plastic putty knife with the goo gone? Or did you let the stuff soak in and try rubbing it out?

I bought this based on recommendations from this forum. I haven't used it for intended purpose yet (removing wax for body kit installation), but seems to work great for other small projects I had involving removing adhesive. I believe it around $7.99 from Advance Auto.

Not sure what the overall consensus is, but Goo Gone is a little too abrasive to use around the car.

It will also probably be a bit more pliable if its warm. You can use a heatgun(though I don't), or take super hot water on a towel and put it on there, then use can use your remover in conjunction with the warm source

Yeah, get the 3M Adhesive Remover. I keep cans of it all around (house, shop, you name it) as it's just *so* useful. Check the yellow pages for an autobody/paint supply place if you want OTC.

Some of my buddies who face this problem frequently, told me that the fastest way to remove the thick adhesive residue is to purchase an "adhesive remover roller" (looks like a round, rubber door stop. It mounts to a drill. Operate the drill and the roller spins. Touch the spinning roller to the adhesive, and it'll be removed. Will cause very light marring, though.

For me, I'll soak it overnite in WD 40.
