Hey all,

While driving in jersey this saturday, in saddle rock, i got pegged doing 76 in a 55. the officer was polite enough to tell me if i went to court that i could get charge reduced. I told the officer that i was trying to pass a truck in the middle lane...i was in right most lane...The cop didn't say anything besides "slow down, you there are four of you in the car"

I was surpirsed my max hit 76 so smoothly......thank god i was on the turnpike where i usually hit 120mph!!!...

Any advice for the court appreance???....first infraction in 7yrs...or so it seems....

tell the judge you would like him to take the good driving record statute into consideration....it should get you off the hook....no moving violations in the past 3 years or in the next two.

or you could offer to do defensive driving classes and they might let you down lower....

kinda ironic..... 76 must be a popular speed to get pegged at, since mine was 76 in a 35 :o

whoa...and you're still driving???....65 in a 35....i only do that at night on streets that i know had almost zero patrol....did 70 in a 40...nice long two by two by two by two street here in the bronx near yankee stadium....slowed down just in time...:scared

gotta love sports cars with oommph....

didnt mean it like that...you can use that excuse if you havent had anything on your record in the past 3 years...you cant use it again for another 2 years

Nizan, I know how you feel about Maximas moving. The highest I have had my '02 is 130 and the highest I have had my '94 is 125 (its limit). I got pegged for 93 in a 55 in June. However, I caught a major break when I went to ocurt. The cop wasn't there and the bond I posted was refunded to me. I think of this as my "Illinois Speeding Tax Refund." :D

posted bond for WHAT???....

I told the officer i was overtaking a truck and, ironically, he told me to go to court and see if i could get the fine reduced....

In IL, you can post bond on the scene in order to keep your license. In my case, the bond was $105.

I got nailed doing 104 in a 40 in Paradise Valley, Arizona. I had my 1971 Chevelle back then and still had the 3.08 rear end gears (yes, posi). I had just installed the WS6 Trans Am front anti roll bar (1 5/16" bar!) and a rear GM A body big block rear anti-roll bar and I was checking out the improvement in handling. I was headed south on Tatum (those in the Phoenix area will know how curvey it is through a small hill) going through a nice 'S' curve at around 85 mph. As I got to the peak of this small hill, I saw a cop car loading someone in the back seat. The road straightened out at this point and the city limits of Phoenix was only a couple miles away (I was in Paradise Valley). I got on it figuring by the time the cop finished loading his prisoner and got into the car and started after me, I would be long gone-those Dodge Aspens with wimpy 318s were pretty slow.

Stupid me. I forgot about the radio. Another cop car was waiting at the bottom of the hill with a radar gun. He pulled out lights flashing. I thought momentarily about running into Phoenix figuring he couldn't follow me...but I came to my senses and pulled over immediately. The cops did the 'felony stop' proceedure-hands out the window, engine off, etc. They approached the car with hands on their guns. I thought for sure I was going to get arrested. I was 19 at the time, but I was living at my parents while going to ASU and knew they would be seriously mad at me.

Anyway, to make a long and beautiful story short and ugly, because I pulled over right away, was cooperative and obviously had not been drinking, the cop gave me a ticket for 104 in a 40. I'd post the ticket as proof, but the writing has long since faded in the 21 years since I received it. I wonder if Paradise Valley would still have a record of it...the judge said it was by far the highest mph ticket he had ever seen and if he had been the cop I would have received a ticket for reckless. As it was, the fine was $184...in 1981. The 4778 Holley double pumper I was fixin' to buy had to wait. About a year later, I switched to 4.11 gears and my top end dropped to only around 120 at 6800 rpm, so my top end speeding pretty much stopped.

Well lets see, I have done 90 in a 30, 65 in a 35 every day, 100 in a 55 every day and thats all w/o being caught.

But... I was nailed doing 97 in a 55, and 78 in a 35. Paid both.

First of all you should not pass on the right, that's a no no when it comes to cops plus i think it's technically illegal. Second if the cop was being polite he would have given you the ticket for under 14 mph. Third don't tell the judge you tried to pass a truck 21 mph over the speed limit.

Chances are by going to court your ticket will be reduced to under 14mph. Just tell the judge about your good driving record and all should be fine. Since you are outta state don't count on it getting thrown out. So determine for yourself if it's worthwhile to spend a day in court for a reduced ticket, don't know if points transfer? There also may be additional court fees.

In Kentucky, getting caught for 26 or more over the limit results in a mandatory hearing and possible suspension. Are other states like this?

My main complaint is that most cops everywhere target speeders exclusively. Why not also target people who don't stop at intersections, people who tailgate, people who don't signal, and people who drive with only their parking lights or no lights after dark? IMO, *this* would make the roads a lot safer.

Why? Because nearly everyone speeds and if you set up on a road with an artificially low speed limit, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. It's all about revenue. They can catch more speeders in an hour than red light runners...plus, it is probably safer for the cops since they don't have to navigate dangerous intersections to catch violators. Most cities have large budgets and they can't raise taxes too much without risking being voted out, so they find other ways to get the money, like through traffic fines.

I used to be stationed in New Mexico and would drive over 100 MPH for hundreds of miles. There it's like 100 miles to the next city and hardly any cops. I got pulled over once for doing over 90 in a 65. It must have been my lucky day, or maybe the cop could sense I had a bad week because he let me go with just a warning.

Texas has to be the worst place for speeding, everyone drives the speed limit (or much slower) and every little sh*thole town has plenty of cops. I got so many tickets in Texas I can't even count them. Whats worse is the're all for like 10MPH over. I've never been pulled over for anything so petty anywhere. The only time I caught a break was when it was really an emergency. I got nabbed doing over 100 on some lonely highway on the way to the hospital. The cop even told me to use my flashers if I was going to be driving that fast.

I got nabbed for doing over 100 off highway 101 near Santa Barbara. The cop was pissed, but the ticket he wrote majically dissapeared. Traffic here almost always moves 15-20 MPH faster than the posted speed limit. I have even heard of people being pulled over for driving too slow or obstructing traffic and they were already driving over the speed limit.

so they find other ways to get the money, like through traffic fines.

And parking tickets

Around here, they only run radar in places the speed limit is too low for the road. Highway 360 is 3 lanes each way and other than rush hour, it flows at 70 mph even though the speed limit is 60. The cops sit on the overpass with a radar and 5-6 cars and bikes waiting at the end of the on ramp and they pick them off like flies-but only when traffic is light and the risk to others from speeders is low. When they should be doing this is during rush hour when cars are cutting in and out of traffic, driving on the shoulder, cutting people off, etc.

On the main road that runs by my house, within a 3 mile radius, I cannot begin to count the number of accidents caused by red light runners I have seen just this summer and early fall. I see 2-3 a week at a minimum. Do the cops monitor the intersections? No, because they are raising revenue on 360 a few miles away. Someone flying by me in the left lane at 20 over is far less dangerous IMO than some jerk that runs the light 2-3 seconds late.
