Red boat restoration

This is another boat that needed some TLC and was friend of the black boat beat up thread. I think this boat took about 16 hrs, both interior and exterior.

I used the same combo as 105 and solo wool pads. I had to do some wetsanding on this one also.

Very nice. What grit paper did you use?

Thanks buddy! I used 1500 and then 2000 on the heavy scratches, 105 finished out the job.

Very nice work Greg!

Thanks Bryan! I just use a Surbuf pad last night, OH MY they are great. I have another boat I want to try the surbuf on to see if it will work like a rotary and wool pad combo.

Nice job Greg !!

Thanks!

What kind of money can you get for that in the fine state of Utah

I can ask for and get 15-23$/ft for corrective work. While in the process I often think this kind of work should garner much more, its tough on the body.

cheers,

GREG

I hear ya. I'm done doing any major correction unless the pay is worth it.

Yesterday I "over the phone quoted" a lady, $15 to $35 a foot for a 27 foot RV. Too much, well when she started to say the roof was faded, I didn't have much interest.

Greg again nice work

And yes it is very hard on the body, So I know. Most of the time when I am swinging a buffer over my head for 8 or 9 hours I think I must be crazy and am working for way too cheap

I start at $20.00 per foot on smaller type boats like that, thanks for the reply. I like to check the barometer in other markets. Some people are so cheap and don't seem to appreciate the expense in materials, time and the skill involved

Did you finish with just the 105 or go with a fine polish ?

Excellent work Greg!

Working on boats is definitely hard on the body...that and Gel Coat never seems to finish down quite as well as automotive paint no matter what you do to it. :nixweiss

Greg did you ever get a chance to try the Surbuf pad on gelcoat yet? I was thinking about this the other day after getting a few calls for boats.

Thanks.

Greg . . . . HOLLY CRAP MAN! I didn't know that 105 was gel coat friendly. That damn thing looks so good man. Wish we had more boats to do out here. Stunning work.

I got a question though . . . . . so if you bid the job by the ft what happens if it's like a

30ft boat or something yet it's really tall . . . . how do you factor that in to the price if that makes any sense.

I charge more for deep hulls, and that gets tricky for me as I don't do many deep hull boats. I shoot for an hourly rate then.

Thanks for the positive comments!

Excellent work.

Doing this kind of work with a machine over your head is killer on the body. I also agree that people are charging and/or getting much less then the effort they put into the job.

Greg,

Nice work man. more power to you there buddy. I hate boats. I once did a 30 trophy. It had a deep hull and took almost two weeks. I told my self never ever again. I simply hate gel coat that much. Boat came out great! Nice work buddy.

Ive been looking at a few guys around lake lanier, there charging $15 a foot per side it sounds silly but hey maybe its easier to sell quoting one side. i just finish a 45 footer in the water last week, glad it was in good shape it was the hardest thing ive done and probably not safe either. and of coarse didnt charge enough tring to get my foot in the door down there. wouldnt mind doing a house boat there flat! forget this buffing boats on a tube with your cord floating on a flip flop.lol
