Recommendations for Faded Black Bumpers/Trim

Hey Guys - I've got a 91 VW GTI that has some pretty badly faded wheel arches and side molding trim.. Most of the parts are NLA from VW and are pretty expensive because of it.



I was wondering if anyone have any good recommendations for products to use to either re-dye or blacken the plastic. I have tried Black-to-Black and it works for a little while, but its greasy feeling and isnt ideal.



Has anyone had any experience with the SEM black trip paint? I've heard its pretty much an exact match and a permanent solution..



Any help would be much appreciated! I'd post the car but it's not 'legal' yet =]

I have used Forever Black with good results. Black Wow is getting a lot of good reviews as well.

I use a product called Aqua Bead on my wifes truck trim. I also use it in the wheel wells. I use it straight on the trim and 50/50 with water in the wells. I apply with a MF applicator 2 coats and buff off excess. lasts for about 2-3 weeks. Subsiquesnt applications are very easy.

SEM Trim Black is the way to go. Be sure to thoroughly clean and scuff before

applying. Durability is excellent for an aerosol product. Yes, i do use from time

to time.

As has been mentioned, cleaning the oxidized layer off the top is the most important. I personally like softscrub (the kitchen stuff) but I have heard of good thing about using steel wool. For a really far out approach check this out:

I really like Black Restore by tufshine TUF SHINE Black Restore | TUF SHINE | Permanent Tire Shine Dressing For Autos, Trucks, Boats and RV's

I used this on a mini cooper and the stuff is a sealant that really last a VERY long time. I've also used this on tires for a matte finish that last.



I also like black WOW, but it does not last as long as Black Restore.

Thanks for the reply guys.. I think i'm going to do the SEM trim paint, its the only permanent solution. I don't want to keep having to re-apply a temporary fix.



BTW - The heatgun method does work, I've tried it myself.. I guess it burns away any contaminents left on the plastic.. only problem is its very difficult to get an even finish..

Wow, an autopian that has tried it!!! Did you try to go back and steel wool it for a more even appearance? I have an Amigo that has lots of bad looking trim, I'm gonna have to experiment. I'm really happy with the way the softscrub worked, but not happy with the amount of time it takes.
