RE: Accumalated brake dust

I had my tires rotated the other day . the two front tires are now on the rear of the car and theres a ton of baked in brake dust on my rims. i'm not sure if the rims are alloy or alluminum.

on two seperate days and about an hour each time i was outside removing the brake dust and barely finished one tire. i used megs wheel cleaner, simple green and i also made a paste out of vinegar and baking soda and used a small wire brush and i removed over 95% of the brake dust, but there still some etching.

do you guys know of something else that will work . that was on one wheel, and still three to go. if i can't find a better solution i'm taking this baby elsewhere and then keep them clean from there.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

You could try cleaning the wheels, and then claying them. Also, a metal polish like 3M Metal and Chrome or Mothers--add the Mother's power ball or a microfibre glove and it might help.
When you get it off, put on a few coats of sealant. Folks here prefer Poorboy's Wheel Sealant (about 5:1 over anything else). A wax or synthetic sealant will work for a while, but there is a lot of heat on front wheels and may break down quicker than PB's wheel sealant.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

I have an F150 Super Crew which generates a TON of brake dust. I have clearcoated aluminum rims with 3-4 coats of poorboy sealant on them. The dust washes off easy but 10-20 miles down the road they are black again.

Two weeks ago I pulled my pads and installed ceramic pads. These ARE the way to go for your personal vehicle. These pads generate next to no dust. They were $50 which is about $20-25 more than the semi-metallics but worth every penny!

Re: Accumalated brake dust

the rims have port holes the size of a quarter and they go in a complete circle around the rims. i own a buick and there the original rims,it's hard to get into the holes to clean the etching thats left behind after i remove the brake dust. i ordered pb sealant and it should be here by next week. i figured by the time i get the rims cleaned the sealant will be here and then i'll seal em.

the next time i replace the front breaks i'm gonna look into ceramic pads.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

I come across bad wheels all the time the ,when there bad dependant on wheel type I go the acid route even sometimes after two ateempts some bits just dont want to go .
unless the customer is willing tom pay the extra time to get them right I do the best that I can and just explain the situation.
Poor boys boast that there wheel cleaner needs no agitation I cant comment on that yet as I have not tried it.
If you wash your wheels weekly you dont have to get agressive with them soapy water will work great.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

has anyone tried p21S wheel gel cleaner? the gel is supposed to be for wheels that produce excessive brake dust, and the gel could be left on for upto two hours.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

i agree with jason here, once you get them up to par , a weekly or every 3 days or so , soapy water and a wheel brush will be fine .

The etching is like scars on your rims . You won't be able to bring it back 100%.

Try that wheel gel and give it a good scrubbing then seal it . Thats the best you can do without repainting or dipping your rims.

BMW's are notoriuos for this so I feel your pain..Aloha

Re: Accumalated brake dust

before i order the tire gel i'm gonna try a 1/2 inch wire barrel brush on the end of a dewalt drill. it's round like a baby bottle brush i just don't want to scratch em.

P.S. it's a little off topic but i'm curious. Haw/element have you ever run into dog the bountyhunter on the streets of paradise. that guy kills me hahaha. that darn smiley went in the wrong place

I haven't run intp the DOG yet !! I 1st heard about him when he went into Mexico to grab that rich boy rapist and then HE got into trouble . The shows great . I watch all the time to see the places I recognize and watch 'em nab those losers .

I thought about sending him some of my detailing flyers with a proposal for those big SUV's . If he wasn't happy though I have to face ther wrath of Beth.. :hang:

Re: Accumalated brake dust

Yeah i heard about the arrest in mexico, at that time i did't know anything about the guy. I'll tape the programs so i don't miss any.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

I would highly recommend Eagle One All Wheel Cleaner.... (formerly known as A2Z Wheel & Tire Cleaner).... It is safe for clear-coat, aluminium, chrome, painted, all wheels.

I have tried everything on my son's front Camaro wheels, and this is the only rim cleaner that will cut the brake dust.

1. Wet wheel & tire
2. Spray a liberal amount of A2Z on wheel & tire
3. Let soak 30 seconds
4. Agitate with wheel & tire brush
5. Rinse, dry and dress.

Works great, even for stubborn, baked-on brake dust.

Re: Accumalated brake dust

Sounds like a plan, i was gonna try megs hot wheel cleaner but i'll try eagles first. i spent 4 1/2 hrs the other day using and acid base wheel cleaner, i'm not gonna use the acid base for the other side, it's not a safe way to go.

Thnx for the reply

joe p . be careful with the wheel acid. It'll eat away the protective coating on your brake calipers . Then they'll rust and look terrible. I like the acid for a really bad job , but not for regular use..

Re: Accumalated brake dust

Thnx for the heads up i started thinking about the acid getten behind the wheel and going on the rotors and calipers. this is the first time using an acid base product on my wheels, would using it once cause any problems ?there won't be a second time.
