Does anyone have any experience with this product?

Looking to clean up lightly oxidized cast aluminum in engine compartments.

I found one US distributor that stocks it. At $22.00

Sounds like their version of the acidic metal treatment that`s used for so many things.

What do their instructions say about rinsing/etc. to neutralize it?

According to the MSDS Alubright is a combination of Phosphoric and Hydrofluoric Acid with a PH of 1.0

Direction on usage are as follows:

Dilute at 1-1 ratio with Water and a dwell time of no more than 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse off with water.

It sounds similar to the stuff I use, if not identical. I`d be very, *VERY* careful what you get that on.

Heh heh, that "rinse off.." could well prove easier said than done, and where`s the rinsed off stuff supposed to go? Someplace where it don`t cause any issues I hope.

No, not flaming the stuff, I have a product called "Metal Blast" that`s about the same thing. But I`m very, very careful about what I do with it. Heh heh, I sure would *NOT* "spray and brush" anything on a vehicle that I was gonna concours! I basically never spray such products, always brushing/dabbing/wiping them on so I have complete control over where the stuff goes.

Is that dilution aluminum-specific?

Marine Clerk- Huh, "acid detergent"..that`s a new one for me. Well, OK...you do rinse off detergents!

I always have something like that on the shelf, but I seldom use it for anything other than those rare Big Projects. Last time was to clean up the Tahoe`s tailpipe a little.

But if I`m not careful I`ll start to think how nicely something like this might shine up those aluminum heads...

I do use a mildly acidic product kinda like this (KRC7, it has Glycolic and Sulfanic acids) to remove the blooming from zinc-plated stuff and I guess this might not be too different once you consider dilution. Never tried KRC7 on the heads, maybe I oughta some time, but it`s awfully mild...

Looks similar to the Flitz Metal Pre-Cleaners. There is one for all metals and one for aluminum. I use them on motorcycle details. Cuts way down on the amount of metal polishing needed. Comes out better too.

Ah, what do you do to rinse/neutralize/etc. those? Wonder how the P21s Polishing Soap (think that`s the name) fits in here...

Well, I usually wash the bike`s after using them and the initial rinse. I usually will also use a metal polish afterwards. So I have not really thought about the neutralizing part of it much. I will use P21S Polishing soap as a first step on the chrome. I love that stuff.

DBAILEY- Ah, sounds like the wash/rinse is sufficient neutralizing.

You don`t use the P21s Polishing Soap on aluminum?

I will if it is a piece that I can use that P21S scrub sponge on, but the FlitZ PreClean for aluminum being a spray allows me to get into all the nooks and crannies of a motorcycle. I don`t do many motorcycles. I only done maybe a half dozen in the past, but a friend (co-worker) with a motorcycle repair shop has started giving me referrals on bikes since he does not have the time to do them himself, but doesn`t want to not provide that service. Motorcycle guys seem more willing to pay for an extensive detail than car guys so far.

DBAILEY- Ah, OK, I see...and yeah, I`ve never done a motorcycle but always figured they`d be a *lot* of work to get truly nice.
Somehow I`d always thought that bikers did such stuff themselves as part of the "pick up your own brass" mentality...my neighbors with the (loud) Harleys spend forever on `em.
