Question: wipe-on CC?

Does anyone have experience with "wipe-on clearcoats" like Protech Presto, 5PD or All-Shield? We've had discussions about X-Kote, which is similar I assume...

Can they *stop* (at least visually) paint checking?

I have used Presto Pro. It works, but it requires UV (sunlight) to cure. Because of that, I have found the cure process to be somewhat unpredictable. When applied and cured properly, however, you can really tell the difference where it has been applied. It is shiny and rock-hard. Never applied it to checked paint, but I suspect that, since the coating is ultra-thin, you would not get satisfactory results unless the checking was removed beforehand. But, if you remove the checking beforehand, I suspect it WOULD prevent future checking. It's really a unique product.

Thanks for the response pootoo. The checking is age-related and luckily very shallow. As I've never used such a product I think it would be a nice solution when the paint is otherwise not salvageable.

Does it give a uniform surface?

Yes it does. You can see it quite clearly. Part of the reason is that there is no orange peel. Very smooth, not slick, yet buffable. Apply it with a cheap paper towel. When wet it appears greasy, but upon cure it yields a great surface. Again, you can really tell its "there." Since the checking is shallow, it should be correctable. This might be the answer to your quest. A little goes a looong way. 1 drop should do at least a square foot area. As stated, the only downside is the dependence on sunlight. If you have access to a really strong UV light, this may confer much greater control. A "black light" won't do it. Anyway, it's good stuff! Good luck! (Extremely durable, I might add.)

I am an X-Kote installer and I can tell you from experience that our product does not fix clear coat ckecking. It will darken it to a degree but you will still see the check lines underneath.

How much does it cost to start out with X-Kote?

Call head office in BC ( 1-888-x-kote-88) they can give you the low down on cost. You might be able to get a starter kit ( 3 pack and a DVD) to try it out first see if you like it. That was something new they introduced at SEMA this year.

Me myself bought in as a distributor 2 years ago now for a few thousand bucks. If you just want to be a guy that offers the service through your shop I am sure there isn't much cost there. You'll just have to get your product form the X-Kote distributor in your area.

Subscribed. I have been looking into this as well, namely Presto for it having so much information, and being readily available to buy. Talked to a guy over the phone and from what I gather, it is basically a way to repair neglected paint and restore it to a 'new' condition.

Rule of thumb from what I gather is to run/sheet water down the area you want to treat, and that is generally what you should expect it to look like. Basically if anything shows past that, it may not be repairable, though if the water seems to make it not visible, it probably is repairable.
