Question reguarding backing plates...

I'm getting ready to order a backing plate, 3.5" perferably...my question is on AG, they have a 3 3/4 Backing Plate for a rotary...then they have a 3.5" for a DA! Would it be wise to get the 3 3/4" backing plate with the DA adapter for 4" pads and 5.5/6.5" pads ???

This way I can have one backing plate for both my DA and Rotary...and would it be wise to use 4" pads, since there its much of an edge right?

I think that makes sense, if not, sorry...I will see if I can find some pictures or something...TIA!:xyxthumbs

I had an adapter come loose from a 3" backing plate (rotary plate with a PC adapter) the first time I used it on the PC. I made the mistke of putting the adapter in the plate, and only tightening it by hand. After that experience, I now hold the plate in one hand tightly, and use an adjustable wrench in the other to get the adapter in as tight as possible. Since I have been using the wrench, I have not had any more issues.

do you think its a wise investment or just get seperate plates?? anyone?? I plan on using the 3.5" plate for 4" spot buff pads. I know alot of ppl use the 2.75" plate for 4" pads...but that plate from AG doesnt seem to nice!

Twista, I thought long and hard about this also when looking for backing plates to go with 4" pads. Since I have both a rotary and DA, I figured I could save money by buying one backing plate (rotary) and getting the $5 DA attachment.

After thinking long and hard, I ended up getting both bp for the DA and the rotary. The logic behind my reasoning for this was that at $5 for the adapter, that's almost half the cost of the backing plate itself. By having separate bp's for each unit, I don't have to waste time switching the bp between machines.

As far as 5.5/6.5 inch pads, you should be using a larger bp than the 3.5-3.75" bp that are meant more for 4" pads. Hope that helps in your decision making process.

It helps alot, thanks!! I more than likely wont ever use a 4" pad with a rotary anyway...so I will get a 3.5" BP for the DA and 4.75" BP for the rotary? I think that works for me!!

Thanks again for all your inputs!!
