Question regarding P/C

I purchased a P/C not to long ago and have used iti a couple times but I noticed that I have to barley touch the paint to allow for the pad to rotate. If I apply any pressure whatsoever the pad will not spin but continues to vibrate. I have found that my results are good but wasn't sure if this is normal behaviour (CDN spelling). Any insight to this would be helpful thanks. Is this some sort of safety feature? If this is normal, what is the idea behind it?

You are not really supposed to apply pressure, just let the pad and polish do the work. In some instances you might need only 10lbs of pressure(I think I saw it on meguiars website).

I just apply enough pressure to keep the pad in contact with the surface.

I know I shouldn't press hard, but even if I apply the slightest pressure it stops the pad from completely spinning around and it basically vibrates but will not completely spin.

The PC doesn't spin or vibrate, it oscillates. When very little pressure is used, the pad will turn a little bit as a bi-product of the oscillation movement, but it really doesn't matter if it turns or not as far as polishing goes. You should apply just enough pressure to stop the pad from turning when polishing, and a little less than that when paint cleaning, and even less than that (weight of the maching alone, no extra pressure) for LSP application. At least, this is how I do it.

ok, I figured that right out of the box the polisher would not be having problems, it is P/C afterall. Thank you guys for the quick replies. I can now continue detailing with confidence in my equipment.
