question regarding deep scratch

Hello fellow Autopians,

Someone had hit the bumber of my SUV that leave at least 3 inch long deep scrath. When I took a closer look on it, I can see its primer. My question is, can it still be fixed by polishing? Or shall I just bring it in in a Body Shop and get my bumper repainted. I really want to avoid going in a body shop because you know how high they will charge me. I just want to know if it can still be fixed by a pro detailer by just polishing or what ever method they will use to get rid of the damage. I will post its pic later on today once I get back from work. Just now, I need an input whether a deep scratch can be fixed. Thank you all!!!

Hi Mike,

If it's a DEEP scratch, it won't be able to be polished out unfortunately.

Sorry to be the one to break the bad news to you, but I just tell it like it is :(

If you can get some pics up, it'll give us a better clue as to how BAD or repairable it is.

So deep scratch can't be fixed then!!! Urgghh!!! It sucks, it sounds like I have to bring it into a shop then!!! Called up my insurance today, and I have to pay a $500 deductible for a freaking scratch in order to get it fixed. It's so ridiculous. Anyway thank you for your quick response kriminal!!!

A $500 deductible ??? Surely it would be cheaper to just not bother with the insurance company and get it sorted yourself ?

Seriously, stick a couple of pics on here and see what others have to say. There may be people who know people near where you live ;)

Yeah thats what I will do. I know some fellow detailer around my area and I would probably asked his opinion about it. And yes I will try to put in the picture after work. Thanks!

Here is the damage I talked about earlier. Please, any pro in these forum advice me whether these is fixable without bringing it into a body shop. As you can see, primer is visible (black). Can these be fixed without getting my bumper repainted in a body shop?

That appears to be down to bare plastic. Where is it on your bumper? Is it highly visible? If it's not highly visible, you can tape, and touch it up yourself (with several layers of touch up paint). This will look better, but not perfect.

The damage is in lower right of the bumper. I was thinking to do that but I think after several layers of touch up paint, I won't get the best result I want. I was told that it will be hard to blend in , although it will get covered, but it reach to my decision that I will just bring it in a body shop. Im just hoping that they wont rip me on price. Do you have an idea on how much they normally charge for these? My suv is a Sequoia.

Well, you seem to have two options :

1. Have a go at touching it in yourself, and living with it for a while - you may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

2. Take it straight into a body shop, paying the price for it, and wondering if you coulda saved a heck off a lot of money by doing step 1.

Personally I'd have a go at touching it in myself, before I go taking it to any body shops. What's the worst thing that can happen ? You make a poor job of it, and take it into a body shop to be corrected ? At least you can say you tried, and it's only cost you the price of a touch in paint. :xyxthumbs

I would probably shop around first around my area on how much they would charge me if I decided to get it fixed in their shops. If the price is on my range then I would definitely let them do it for me. Im no pro in doing-it-myself plus I don't want to make it look worser. My last option in these case will be a touch up paint. I might can live with that. But, thanks for your advice.

This is easy. Try this. I believe you said it is relatively new. Contact your salesperson or even the used car sales manager at the dealer you bought it at, and ask who does their touchup/cleanup/paintless dent repair for cars that came in for trade ins. Every dealer should have someone that they work with. That is how I found a local guy.

I had a bumper on my 10 year old BMW that had appropriate hacks, chips, nicks, etc from 10 years (some were really bad, like when the end of the charging cable hit the bumper and put a melt mark it it ....) and for $90, all the repairs were done and it was repainted to look brand new. This is in the Chicago area too, so I thought that was a great price. Someone like this is good to have in the rolodex.

I will give it a shot to contact my dealership and ask them about it. Also, when I called my insurance, they also give me the shops that they recommend me to bring my suv. I would also check them out. Hey, this is something new so thank you!

The body shops they gave you will be just like any other as far as cost. You should be able to get someone from your dealership (90% certainty), but if not, just look for a paintless dent repair person locally. If they don't do the paint touchups like that, I am sure they will know someone, since the two go hand in hand.

Post back and let us know what you find.

What is the significance of the "paintless" part of the dent repair? Wouldn't something that deep need paint?

Sorry, Noobie question.

Maybe some touch up paint, wetsanding, compounding, then polishing should fix that. Not sure how big it is from that picture.

Would be a fun project too!

I'll definitely post back once I found out the pricing. Thinking about to look around these coming monday. I know its holiday but most shops in my area are open.
