Question on reputation system...

Am I missing something or did the mods get started with extra rep points? I see a lot of green squares

I'm not sure this is bad but I see value in everyone being equal...or is it because the mods just see more rep traffic from monitoring?

Just trying to understand the new system a bit....thanks...

I think they got started off with more squares because they are mods...Personally I dont think the reputation system is going to go very far here. I dont like the idea of rating someone or having someone with more squares than someone else...I get great info from people with 100 posts and great info from people with 14,000 posts. Oh well...Hopefully Im wrong and we see the reputation system go far and earn it's place here on autopia

Is this fair though? Doesn't that provide them an unequal footing?

For instance, what is someone is new to the forum, how can one evaluate the mods if they have farther to fall before the rep shows?

I'm not disparaging the mods here at all as they are excellent, but just trying to understand the process...

I personally think the karma system is a bad idea. If someone has an issue to pick with you, the PM button is only a click away. This is just like an anonymous complaints box, and people will only end up wondering what they got the negative karma for and who gave it to them.

This karma system is retarded and a vindictive tool.

I figured out how to see my points and I got a bad mark for a post about cleaning leather. I think it was because someone kept repeating for someone to buy Leatherique and I kept saying if the leather is coated, there are better and cheaper options  Maybe they got annoyed.

I swear if I had a nickel to zap someone with bad karma for every stupid post (and I see a blizzard of them in the #425 thread from someone pushing Wizard QD), I'd be able to afford Zymol Vintage Glaze.

Yet, I noticed Detail City has karma points too and in the few months I have been posting I have two green squares

I also agree it is not a good idea...to many people are going to use it to get back at members who they have a dispute with. I just dont see a use or why it is important to have here at autopia...anyone have an idea? I feel time should be spent on the chat and getting a chat room which users would like to visit and talk to other members and get help. The chat right now is just not cutting it. We should have a suggestion box to put suggestions for what we are looking for as users. Also, I feel we should have a donation day...Like one Sundays we pass the collection plate..We should have a thread that has a link from DavidB to give donations to the site..I feel bad not paying anything for all this great information and all these friends that help me out. Anyone else like the donation idea? or have a link for me to visit once I get my paypal account up this coming week to donate?

I'm a lazy bum, I haven't even used teh system yet, nor do i really plan to :-?

:werd: Same here...I never go to give someone karma points..I just leave a reply saying nice work..too much work to go through the system..Maybe if there was just a box to check or something when someone leaves a reply you could rate the thread based on a point system for being helpful? Kind of like xanga has their "eprops"...seems easier to me

If you have any comments they will show under "subscribed threads."

I deleted all my subscribed threads prior to adding to this thread!!!!!! I was tired of reading the SOS !!

I take it back, i have 782 threads to still delete.......

The karma system was the result of a spontaneous decision put in place with the absence of a way for the mods to track/modify it. The pitfall of this made itself known in a recent incident . If the feelings reflected in this thread are mutual throughout the community, it's pretty clear that it's not a welcomed feature. At the rate that it's going, unless some change is made that is received very well, I personally assume it will just be ignored or will go away. :nixweiss

It says I have 11 points but I only see two. And what do the square colors denote? I got a grey one and green one?

Thanks!

I read through the explanation...not sure I fully understood it, but I think the grey square means you got a "good" karma point, but it doesn't count because it's from someone with no "experience" or from someone with "bad" karma. Everyone started with 5 points, but you get more for having a certain number of posts or years on the forum. Likewise, members with more "experience" are able to give you more points.

I'm not sure, but here's a quote from David's "news" post:

"If you give a positive rep you add your full reputation power to that person's rep point count and if you give a negative you remove half your reputation power from their point count (rounded down but at least 1 if you have any positive rating power). The exception however is administrators, who have a fixed reputation power of 10 for both positive and negative reps."

I think the reason for the "full bar" is because they are "locked" at a certain rep level. (I'm counting mods as admins. here.) Just a guess, though.

This is just all too confusing imo - I like the idea, however it just isnt carried out right - too few people are using it let alone know how to use it. Any ideas to how it could be modified or changed to better fit the Autopian community

I think the idea was to assist in the Moderation...give people some slack if they had a bad day and said something offensive even if that was not their normal demeanor, while more easily identifying the troublemakers.
