Question for anyone owning a Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk or a Subaru Legacy w/Eyesite

Sorry to drag you off topic, but I respect your opinions.

Will be adding one of these 2 vehicles to my stable. My younger is getting his license and I sent him in a mission to find a safe (IIHS standards) vehicle Sub 30K to add to our household fleet.

He came up with 4:

Sonata

Rav4

Cherokee Trail Hawk

Subaru Legacy Limited w/Eyesite

We eliminated the first 2 and are in the boil down stages.

He wants the Jeep and I want the Subaru?

I would get the Jeep (his first choice) if I had some consensus that it will be reliable and trouble free. I know all cars have issues but I am not looking for more than my fair share.

My love for the Subaru extends from the 2012 we own, and the extra layer of safety the eye site adds.

Any real world experience anyone can add is appreciated. Both will have the 4 cyl engine option.

Kind of trying to get the same thing accomplished here. Good, safe fun, and safety with a Kool factor at 16 YO can handle as can his Dad.

When Ryan started driving I got him a Jeep Patriot.

No guts, good visibility.

My friend has the new Cherokee. It is pretty badass. So much so that his mom went out the same week and bought one. Still too early to tell if those will have any issues but I think they are covered pretty well. I do love Subie's though too but you won't have as many features in the Legacy I think.

IME the eye site system isn't something for a new(ish) driver, and that's even assuming it really works properly (all the time). Wrong wrong wrong especially on the philosophical level (and that's assuming it works right all the time). Buy him the Vehicle Dymamics Accident Avoidance Class instead and teach him stuff that'll last a lifetime (one day, cheaper than your insurance deductible). And yeah, I'm dead-serious in a bet-his-life way. OK, OK...end of lecture.

I'd get the Subie (despite both of mine being utterly unreliable lemons) without all the high-tech options. I'd get a CPO one as opposed to new.

I question buying a new(ish) driver any kind of SUV. Just not the kind of driving dynamics for somebody who's just burning in the whole mind-body-car thing.

Oh Yeah !!!!

Stephen had a mazda tribute for his first, then ryan w the jeep.

Ryan is still the "logical" one, and Stephen, well he's mini me.

My older son was so friggin easy to shop car with. He listened to me and know I am a car guy. Hooked him up with a 2012 Subaru Nav, leather, moonroof. Limited with Paddle shifters and gets 35 MPG!

My little one, strong opinions and smart but also looking for fun, and kool factor.

I'd go with the Subaru, although I haven't driven the Jeep. Eyesight is the top rated collision avoidance system.

Personally, I like Jeep. That all said... My kid is getting a Volvo for his or her first and it's not a debate. After being hit head on by a drunk driver in my last S60, I'll always own at least one in my stable. The newer S60's can be had pre owned low milage for under 30k an usually come equipped with safety features that will blow away everything else in the industry.
