Question about my paint.

I drive a 1999 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4.



I am not sure if my paint, which is original is, clear coat or not. Through out the forum I here of Toy's having soft single stage paint, and some having clear coat.

I don't like to appear stupid but I don't know which I have, how do you tell?

By 1999 I believe that Tacomas all had clear coats, except for the white. The best way to check is to use a paint cleaner on an applicator pad (Scratch-X works if you don't have any other polishes/compounds/cleaners). If after rubbing it on the paint you see the color of your vehicle on the pad, then you have a single stage paint.
 
Change..I do a friend's truck which is a silver and a 98 Tacoma..and his is clearcoated..so I would bet yours is also..The only colors I believe were single stage where white and black..but funny thing is not all are..some are clear coated also...



But to tell take a lite polish and rub a area...and if you get paint color transfer you have single stage paint...if non you have a base and clear coat paint...



What color is your Tac..

Al, my Taco is "Black". I better do the mild abrasive test to make sure whether it is single stage or clear coated.

David I did the polish test on my Tacoma with 3m PIII RC!!!!!



The front of the truck is definitely topped in clear coat (hood and both front fenders), however the right rear that was fixed when someone ran into me ( at just over 600 miles) is single stage without a doubt !

Now for real confusion, the left rear is also single stage!!

When the truck is clean (not detailed yet) I can see NO difference in the front to back blend.



Very confusing.
