Question about low rotary speeds for finishing

I think I'm going to get a Chicago Electric from HF. I don't see myself using it more than a couple times a year so I can't justify the large expense of the other quality brands right now. So I'm looking at the two different models that HF carries and I see the cheaper one has a slower range of RPM down to 300, but the more expensive one only goes as low as 1000. I think I've seen where people like to use sub 1000 RPM's when finishing with a rotary. Would it be better to go with the cheaper model then? I would like to be able to learn to finish down with the rotary to speed up the process compared to using a PC.

I think the HF rotary is currently on sale. I've looked at them and the one with the bail handle looks like it is the better machine. IMO 1000 rpm is low enough for using finishing polishes and finishing pads.

It's great to start the product at 300 to 600 rpm and finish down at 600 to 900.

So yes it sounds like a great machine to buy as you could apply quick detaile with it at below 1000 rpm too

hey guys anyone have an idea of the speed per setting on the hf rotory? Its 300-3000 rpm and has 1-6 dial, I would guess its around 500 rpm per but just wanted to make sure. thanks

Here goes:

1= 1000

2= 1400

3= 1800

4= 2200

5= 2600

6= 3000

The dial, however, is variable, meaning 1.5= 1200, 2.5= 1600, etc. Hope this helps out a bit

thanks just what i needed

I personally had a lot of hope for the HF rotary. But once I got to using it I was very disappointed. It definitely slowed down once you apply the pad onto the vehicle surface, so you never know what speed it's actually spinning at. I used it once and ordered a Makita, and have been more than happy since. The HF rotary I now just use for sanding wood from time to time.
