Hi all,so i am working a regular 8-5 mon-fri job and i need extra income plus in the long run i'd like to make vehicle detailing a full time ocupation but for now i am going to start doing cars on the weekends ( i have previous experience, used to do co-workers and family cars when i was living in another state).

I plan on doing mainly washes and if the eventually get more and more involved in paint correction ( i already have everything i need but i want to start slow and steady ) and i was wondering if i need to get a bussiness license and/or insurance even though it's just a side weekend gig for some extra $$$??? i plan on seeking customers that have garages in their own homes so that i can go to them without having to buy water tanks and all that stuff for now.

Suggestions?input? Thank you!

I guess that all depends if you are charging people and paying sales tax to the state and have enough money in your bank account to cover medical expenses if a customer slips on a puddle of tire dressing and breaks their neck.

It doesn't matter if its a weekend, occasional, or full time job. You are charging people for a taxable service that needs to pay sales tax to your state. You need to get a business license (sales/use tax license) and business insurance to cover your behind. Unless you're a gambling man that wants to take the risk where the consequences can be very severe legally and financially, do things right the first time.

That's what i thought,i'll start looking into that. I guess it's gonna take me longer than i expected since i am barely making enough money to pay my bills and i can't even afford health insurance of my own. I'll see what i can do.

I don't mean to discourage you from starting up the business, and there are always certain risks when going into business at the beginning. Becoming licensed with your state is not that expensive (only $20 for WI), and even filing to be an LLC is under $150 in most states. This could be just 1 weekend of work and you'll have all that paid for.

Insurance can be a little harder since many insurance companies will not write a small business policy for a start-up. This means that you might have to be in business for a year or two, even as a weekend job, before even considering getting insurance in the first place.

Oh i see,the license is not really my main consern because it's a one time deal/payment basically ( correct? ),but the insurance is what worries me more because it's a monthly thing so either way i'd have to get a couple of customers before i get insurance so that i can have that more steady income coming to pay the monthly/quarterly fee for Ins.

I plan on just trying to get some neighbors as customers and friends before advertising or anything like that and to start getting the $$ to shop around for the insurance. It is a bit discouraging, but it's not your fault, you're just giving me an honest answer which is what im looking for just so i don't have any doubts whenever i decide to dedicate a lot of time to this.
