question about DA buffer & paint

On my 99 mustang i have some scratches on my rear fender, they are right on a "raised" edge where the fender turns flat (if u know a mustang u know what im talkin about) I am fairly certain they are too deep to remove but i would like to flatten them down so they are less noticeable.



My question is how much can i wetsand with say 2000-4000 grit and leave enough to also compound/polish with megs 105/205 and PC7424xp before going too far, i don't wana **** up my paint. and id love those scratches to not be there so i dont eventually have to get it repainted.



Also id like to know if i can do the same to my side scoop.



I got these scratches from my cousins crazy ex gf's stupid ****ing fence lol and i want them gone!
 
Hard to say without a paint gauge. Try hitting it to semi-flatten the orange peel and go from there. As long as you're using 4000 to final sand with, you won't need to do very aggressive polishing afterwards.
 
If I recall correctly that's not a sharp bend, but more of a rounded curve downward. I always try to avoid heavy correction near sharp bends, but I think you should be okay on an area like that area. It's bends like the ones below you have to be careful of.

As David suggested, you should be using a PTG though.

Clidefrog- If that were my Fox body I'd be all about preserving the original paint and avoiding having to get anything repainted. So I'd much rather err on the side of caution with regard to living with the scratches. Better imperfect original paint than a repaint IMO, but I suppose other people might see it differently.
 
if i had a ptg i would use it :P but i dont, one area is kind of rounded yes, but im talking about right as the lip turns flat for the last inch of the fender, there is a bend there.

Thanks for the help guys. im sure ill have more questions as once my equipment gets here ill be detailing her for the first time since i bought it.
